Casey Affleck doesnt have the chops for a drama lead. Silly title for a serious movie.
Didnt need the big twist. Should've been a road trip movie with Morgan Freeman and left the life story about the dero mother on the social security cheques.

That's good to hear, I met a guy who worked on the special effects for it just recently who seemed very proud of the work they did (although he admitted being depressed after seeing Avatar lol). From what I've seen it's one of the slicker looking movies to come out of Australia...

About GBG - I can understand why you wouldn't like it, I too wasn't a massive fan of the twist in it, but I did enjoy it overall. I disagree about Casey Affleck also, have you seen Jesse James Otis? I thought Casey was Oscar worthy in that film...
I went into GBG thinking it would be trash, I was looking forward to watching Casey in another lead after seeing JJ, but I certainly didn't have a high level of resect for his big bro. I was pleasantly surprised with it and found it to have depth I never thought Affleck had in him as an artist (apart from whatever hand he had in writing Good Will Hunting).
I have wanted to buy it on Blu-Ray since actually - looked at it the other day, but it was $35 I think... I struggle to buy discs at that price thesedays, can always get a bargain elsewhere.
I did buy Milk on Blu tho (well was my missus' choice), was on sale for $20. Also got Le Mepris finally, I needed to buy something lol
I received 8 1/2 Criterion Blu yesterday, and I have Mystic River, Atonement and Last King of Scotland on their way, can't wait! Those 3 cost me AUD$80 including delivery, so why would I bother buying 3 titles for $110+ from JB when I can get titles from amazon that aren't even out here yet, for less than 3/4 of the cost!
My missus will be home late from work tonight, so I would usually jump on MW2 for adecent session, but am getting sick of it so will be watching one of my Criterion Blu-Rays instead... I am thinking of thrwing on Last Year at Marienbad, did you buy it yet Otis?

I havent been to a JB in a while. Havent had enough blu's released in Aus to warrant the trip. Still wanna get 'Marienbad though.
My Amazon order of Zombieland, Run Lola Run, Boogie Nights, Freddy vs Jason, Magnolia and Pan's Labyrinth was shipped today . Cant wait for it to get it next week. Going to keep me busy for a day or two!! Hahaha
Most JB-Hifi blu-rays go for $22 these days dont they?
Can you place the song that plays on the Studio Canal blu's menu? Le Mepris and Belle have the same tune playing. I wanna know what it is.
Wouldn't mind seeing Milk for Josh Brolin in another role.
And nah havent seen Jesse James.
Wings of Desire is also in your collection

Going to JB tomorrow now.
This post is more aimed at Kobes because he has a very good understanding of what I like.
Last Year at Marienbad is on my hotlist. What else do you think I should get while Im there with the superior selection JB has compared to other shops in Aus.
Depatures comes out on DVD in March/April.
Panic Room is cool. Havent seen it since it first hit DVD.

First film I have given up on in a while was MILK. Just couldn't dig it at all and got bored 1/2 hour in.
I agree that GBG would have been a better film (and book) without that twist, but I still liked the way it was directed and performed, thought Casey A was exceptional in it, and in Jesse James too.

I watched Marienbad, and man it was a mind fuck! I didn't get much out of it, heaps of narration, tonnes of confusion lol I went into it knowing it was a mysterious film, but I didn't get anything out of it upon initial viewing. I was pretty tired, almost knodding off at one point so I am sure that didn't help. Gonna do some reading up on it and give it another go.
My order ( Atonement, King of Scotland, Mystic) shipped yesterday too, but one week? They take over 2 weeks to me, have you had orders arrive in a week from amazon? 8 1/2 took 2 1/20 weeks...
JB had about 6 titles under $25 when I last looked - the Canal titles and a few on special like Milk.
No I'm not sure about the song, I saw your post on the HD Digest forum a few weeks back.
I thought Milk was really good actually, Brolin was good in it, but Penn was brilliant and deserved his statuette for the role. I like Van Sant's filmmaking, and this is probably one of his most accessible films, pretty straight (no pun intended) compared to most of his work.
You should check out Jesse James Otis, Pitt is really good in it as the lead, and Casey might surprise you Aussie director Dominik (directed Chopper) it's a very good film - it's long and slow though.
The missus wants to watch Wings of Desire, will get to it one day soon hopefully...

Be warned with Marienbad, it's a trip of a film... but it's a trip I'm gonna revisit with keen interest. It was like a dream for the entire running time, I found it hard to find my feet in it at all.
Gee mate, put me on the spot! Are you interested in Baraka at all? Check out some clips of it and do some reading, coz if interested it is a great Blu-Ray. I haven't seen Panic Room in years either... do you mean DVDs or Blu-Rays?
Thinking about my Blu-Ray collection...
Um, Deer Hunter is a brilliant film and is on Blu. One of the best American films imo actually. Have you seen Gattaca? Oh, have you seen Match Point? The Woody Allen film?? I fkn loved that film...
Hidden is on DVD, I always recommend that one - again, not something to be watched through one open eye tho like I did Marienbad...

It wasn't the best film of last year or anything, but it was a really good biopic about a really interesting character. Like I mentioned above, I like GVS's style and found it pretty accessible for his kind of film. Penn's acting was top notch.

I was already paying well over a hundred dollars on my shipment so I went for express for the added assurance.
I forgot I had Amelie and Kwaidan in my room waiting to be seen haha
The Deer Hunter is very graphic isnt it? Like amputations?
Hidden (Cache) has been on my list for a while actually. Next to me I have a post-it that I write down all the must-gets
Im not fussed about DVD or blu. When Im at JB I'll get it on blu since they're so cheap.

Oh ok, I just get regular post - amazon will always re-shop any lost items, it just depends how patient you are.
Go watch Amelie and Kwaidan right now you fool!! haha I love how even you can't keep a track of all your purchases
The Deer Hunter is an absolute classic of American cinema, no more graphic than other films from the era, everybody should see it once at least - just like they should The Godfather.
PS - love the sig pic!!

Found the picture on google images. Resized, cropped it and fixed up the text.
Bought the second season of Twin Peaks on eBay yesterday too. Going to have heaps to watch next week and Im on holidays!!!
I have the movies waiting to be seen sitting on the floor in front of the TV and once they've been played they go with the rest.
The Baader Meinhof Complex is an interesting look at the German "hippy" era while they were experiencing the shit of the Vietnam War.
Good movie with some great acting. Bruno Ganz is in it, right through the movie I though it was him by his voice and deliverance but he looks much older than Downfall. Which the producer did also.
There werent many 'good guys' in it which made it slightly hard to watch. Everyone is dominated by their own ambitions and beliefs, mix that with an already volitile state and violence is bound to happen.

I watched four films yesterday - four heavy films with only one being slightly lighter.
Ordet - For some reason it always takes me a while to 'tune in' with the older movies. It was a very dreamy and the odd acting I thought was meant to detach us. So we can really be there to spectate what is happening.
Hidden - I invited you over so you could be preset....
Ripley's Game - I'm a true admirer of John Malkovich. Malkovich was born to be Tom Ripley, a man who manipulated a dying man into killing all because Ripley was insulted at a party.
Revanche - It's about a man working at a brothel & a prostitute and a housewife & husband cop. It's about their lives and consequence. It was good.
Twin Peaks season two arrived. Going to watch it now.

Oh so Ordet didn't mesmerise you, I was under it's spell the entire film and was completely blown away with the finale. The compositions, the age of the film and the acting all completely soaked me up. I'm not a religious person, but films like this and a few from Bergman had me in a trance.
So did you like Hidden??

Glad you liked Hidden, it was #2 on my best for the noughties
I wanna get it on Blu, but there's nothing available yet. I bought the Madman (I think?) disc ages ago will have to watch it again soon, has been a while... still haven't watched The White Ribbon but can't wait, he is a brilliant filmmaker - even tho I have only seen one of his films.
I know that films like Ordet are an acquired taste though, but I found the climax one of the most profound of any film I have seen, but completely convincing.

The Elephant Man was very profound and had me very close to tears. When Merrick started to cite a verse from the Bible my heart dropped from the intensity. Only someone as distrurbed as Lynch could take such a story and give it light.
The movie which started this thread didnt leave me disappointed at all, it left me trembling.
I saw it at school for science while learning about genes. Instead in english they make us watch things like What's Eating Gilbert Grape.
Cover art is no different than the DVD. Still good news, should mean the March 1st release wont chance

3.99US per item I payed. So all up I payed about 10 bucks more per blu and that'll make it a little over 30 for each of the six I bought. Still cheaper than Sanity blu's lol
Zombieland was awesome, just had to ignore some of the main zombie rules hahaha
Great PQ and AQ
Boogie Nights now!!

Wtf? I don't get it, my last order of 4 Blu-Rays was a total of $16.95 for shipping, and that was via Standard International Shipping! That works out to $4.24 per disc!
Which shipping did you select?
If I put those 4 discs into my cart and select Expedited it comes to $29.95
For International Courier it comes to $45.95

How the f did you get 6 discs for $24 via courier!! Tell me your secrets, as I said $46 USD for 4 discs is what I get, that's why I always use the bog standard delivery... must be where you live or something I am jealous... will be waiting until the end of next week or early the week after for my order which shipped the same day as yours I think :S

Oh gotcha, I thought you were onto something then!
Yeah, I have done it a few times, but can't justify it all the time - I guess if you only order once in a while it's best to choose courier... I usually do it for christmas presents etc.
So what did you watch?

Today was Zombieland and Boogie Nights.
Out of them all Zombieland would be the lightest to watch, the rest are all heavy again hahaha I seem to buy only serious movies these days. Gotta get some comedies soon.
Boogie Nights will always be a great film. The PQ I thought was great only getting soft on occasions.
Tomorrow I'll see Freddy Vs Jason & Run Lola Run I reckon and the day after will be Magnolia and Pan's Labyrinth.
As you can see Zombieland is the only feel good movie of the bunch.
EDIT! Do you like the slimmer cases of America?

Geez, this has almost completely become Kobeson's and Otis's exclusive chat!!
Um, nah I prefer our cases I think - although the space on the shelf comes in handy... the Criterion's are the same width as ours tho, due to booklets inside...

Two episodes of Twin Peaks to go!!!! Man is it freeky!! Loving it!!!!
Might get the soundtrack once its finished, its one of the highlights of it.
It's strange, now I've spent so much time with all the characters I began to love them all.
EDIT: Preordered Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
That last episode was one of the most memorable and mesmerising piece imagery of any show and movie I've ever seen.
Very mean cliffhanger though.

Hey ultra fags. It seems this thread is about the only thread where i recognize the names of the people who are posting. What a bunch of newcomer fags
Anyway, any suggestions for some good horror movies i can watch? Doesn't matter how old they are, just want some decent ones. I am slowly becoming addicted to them. A few good ones will throw me over the top!
Cheers

You gotta go "The Exorcist" Miner, then I'd take a look at "Martyrs" if you want to get totally freaked out... "The Descent" would be well worth a look and maybe round your night off with the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" too.
Some good pointers here too... http://www.best-horror-movies.com/10...or-movies.html
