Looks like Nioh had more influence than I anticipated...

Onimusha and the return of Ninja Gaiden would be nice too.

Gameplay demo from Gamescom. Looks a little clunky to me:

Dark souls Tenchu. It does look clunky but still decent. I wonder if that gameplay is all you do? Id like to see a bit more variation tbh otherwise I can just replay Bloodborne/Dark Souls. Hopefully theres exploration, that last scene where the camera pans up the hillside, is there a linear path up there or can you make your own way using that grappling hook. 10 hours of clinking swords could get really repetative.

It looks a lot like Nioh. Which is not good news for me, because I didn't enjoy Nioh at all (sorry Smajs!).

Nioh was a good game but was held back by two major issues IMO.

Firstly both of the Beta demos suffered from atrocious controls, if I recall correctly firing the bow involved some ridiculously stupid combination of right stick and it was unweidly and cumbersome, lock on had issues and overall the combat wasn't explained clearly enough.

The other was the appearance of repetition and plainness, the first few areas were too familiar and lacked in enemy variety.

Now for the full release the controls were far tighter and responsive, they also streamlined the bow and it felt much easier and more fun, as for the combat variety and enemy/scenery, another mistake on the devs part, the game opens up much more in the last third with far more interesting areas and introduces new attack patterns to the enemies, not to mention other weapon types and effects to chain and change the way of attack.

Unfortunately it is asking a lot of the player to invest so long into something that made a bad first impression with the Beta and then had several hours of frustration to begin the game.

Such a shame because it was so much fun to return to areas when stronger and see the world change as new enemies emerge and the bosses alter their patterns, would have been great to co op, I think though that in a sequel, if there ever is one, they will take more care to make the first impressions count.

The world is full of distractions, if a game requires 25 + hours to finally open up and give the goodies then it'll probably lose more players than gain new fans.

Totes agree Smaj, the first few areas of Nioh were dull (the beta area) but it improved as it went, there was some brilliant level design deeper into the game and the combat was tight once you got it. Again, a little inaccessable for new players. Theres a fine line between that and hand-holding that a lot of games do these days.

Sekiro doesnt look like it has much of the RPG side that Dark Souls has, dissapointing for me, I like to play different styles. I get the feeling once you know an area it'll be very linear.

Looks like it'll have microtransactions, going by the pre-order page

    "In-game purchases optional"

    https://store.playstation.com/en-gb/...KIROPRE0000001

Published by Activision, so we probably should've been expecting it.

God the games industry has become so depressing lately, or maybe I've just become way too cynical.

Not you. 1st party SONY devs are pretty much the last bastion of hope for me from a dev side of things.

From Software, it should have a great story, & be on the awesome list I would expect.

There isn't a game they've created that isn't in the great games list, although not sure if using Activision is a good move, that could change things possibly???

Loves himself a Souls game and is very keen for this.

Death is better than resurrection for the inhabitants of the world, resurrect too often and they suffer.

    For
there is an NPC in blue that can help in the fight, don't talk to him until you kill all of the smaller minions first though, that way you can double team the main foe.

So how's the game guys, is it another From Software master piece Metacritic is saying 89/100 will be there lowest scoring title if that is an indicator.
I still think Bloodborne and DS 3 are some of the best games ever made.

You can use the covered walkway on the far left to flank behind him and remove the first bar of health aswell making it even easier.

It feels exactly like a SoulsBorne game except with way better movement.

This game can be incredible at high speed blasting through foes and swinging off into the distance, also great slowed down and feels so much like Tenchu when you wall hug around corners.

Not the weapon variety of Nioh at first, but the prosthetics and counters open up a plethora of approaches to combat.

Some of the Samurai foes put up an awesome fight, the duels look and feel incredible, one incorrect or poorly timed lunge can end the battle.

An enemy may unleash a barrage of furious quick attacks and you have to dodge and weave to find an opening, or a foe may bide their time, probing for a weakness, waiting for you to strike first and end you ha.

And the bosses and mini bosses...

I went a bit too fast so I went back and backtracked a bit, I missed a bunch of side paths, crazy how many ways there are to go and things to see. The world is also so well connected and feels great to unlock shortcuts.

I remapped the controls, put attack on Square, and sprint to R2, feels good.

Also turned off the HUD and rang the bell of doom, going all in ha ha ha.

Edit - Those kites in the sky, brilliant.

Last night was an emotional learning curve for me. Firstly I died maybe 25 times trying to defeat a mini boss in Ashina Castle courtyard, and I was about to give up, but I persevered and won. Then I passed the slithering foe with no problems, and met the game's first major boss. On my first go I dodged and watched and died in 4 seconds... second go, I parried all of his attacks but fell under hooves. Third time I realised I could parry, and grapple to him and do considerable damage. I died but resurrected and finished him off. So so satisfying.

The locations are amazing. Mindblowing. Yesterday I just sat near a waterfall in a bamboo thicket and listened to the rain, and creaking bamboo. Spot on.

No Co-op in this one. But it would be out of place if it was I think. This is a very personal journey

Epic Name Bro has started a walkthrough series for this game. I followed EVERY video he made for previous souls games and he is truly the guru for this style of game - He captures the atmosphere and lore within his gameplay. Anyway, with the souls games I liked to watch his guide after I had finished the part he's doing to see how many hidden paths & items i managed to miss. It's also handy if you're struggling with the difficulty of the game - which if its anything like the previous Fromsoft games, is quite possible!

Holy crap... just spent a full day on the boss at the top of Ashina Castle. Now I have to wipe that muscle memory completely for the next boss. Haha.
