I know exactly what you’re saying. The Witcher 3 side quests all had their own arcs that made them really interesting and unique to experience, and experiencing them in the context of Geralt, travelling the land on his own in a fantasy world (where literally anything is possible and you’re never quite sure what to expect), lent them a little extra intrigue too. RDR2 definitely doesn’t come close to matching that.

But what I really appreciated in RDR2 was the central narrative of the gang. You really feel the interactions and chemistry between the characters, and the way those all develop over time (often in unexpected ways) really felt natural and believable to me. I wasn’t expecting that, and I don’t think any game has ever managed that as well as RDR2 has. You really start to feel the pressure that the characters are under and how that affects everyone in different ways is really well done.

I love the way this game leads into RDR1. This is as well done as Star Wars: Rogue One was in that context. I love all of the little callbacks, and also knowing what’s to come really amps up the emotion in some scenes and conversations towards the end.

The only thing that doesn’t line up perfectly between RDR1 and RDR2 is probably Javier.

    Major RDR2 Ending Spoilers!!!:

I don’t think they will do it because I haven’t heard anything at all, but it would be really cool if they did another zombie storyline like they did with RDR 1. That was one of the best DLC stories I had played last gen, and probably second only to Blood and Wine on Witcher 3. And I think it was free, but can’t remember exactly.

Unfortunately Rockstar weren’t happy with the sales of either Episodes from Liberty City (GTA IV) or Undead Nightmare (RDR1) relative to their dev costs, so have said they won’t be doing single player DLC in future. Now they just do free DLC for the online components and make a fortune selling people shortcuts to unlock stuff.

Been having a blast roaming about in this again, had an awesome Revenant moment with a bear, after an extended chase it cornered me with only my knife, we slashed at each other before it pinned me on the ground and played with me the way the government plays with NSW.

It went in for a swipe that tore at my back in much the same way a selection of sultry supermodels scupper the soiree of each other after finding they had all cheated with all of their lovers, giggitty gig cat fight, oh yeah the claws were out.

Another swipe removed all of my credit cards and 50% of my manliness, then it went in for the bite of death.

That night though I did not feel the urge to be swallowed by a furry, horny, she bear, so I pulled out my big one..my knife, and gave it a larger vertical smile and the look on it's dial as it thought a while was oh so vile, waiting around wasn't my style so I legged it a mile.

Damn fucker had a second wind, and the tiny prick I did stick, just made it more quick and I was up shittttttt creek.

I ran, I ran so far away, I just ran, for night and day, the bear was on me like a seagul on a chip, A passer by ran into our path, he go bye bye, I go right by...man I got away....right into a snake bite pfhwooatrrr.

Went to St.Denis for some recuperation before taking Mr. Eugenics out to the Bayou for a lil alligator tug of war.

Good times at The high ridge.

Too bad online ain't good yet.

I had a tussle with some Murfree Brood when all of a sudden a boar sauntered in and began to eat the fallen brood.

I don't like to assume, but I think it was a jilted lover, seemed to gravitate towards the gonads...peckers on the menu for the poked pork payback.

Is that SP or MP? We need more saved outfit slots in Online, three isn’t anywhere near enough.

I finally got around to doing the new dishonourable story missions: they’re pretty damn good. They need to pay more though.

The only annoying thing is that the requirements for gold are bugged on one of them, so it’s the only story mission I don’t have gold for. It’s wreaking havoc with my OCD lol.

Yeah just the SP has this outfit bug.

I agree about too few spots, you should also be able to name each outfit too for easier sorting.

I played some dishonourable missions last week, think it makes you visible to other players as well because I went to break out some fella from that run down jail by the river and some other players got in on the action along with the law to kill me, was great fun being the bad guy.

Yeah a lot of the free roam missions (both honourable and dishonourable) will put you into offensive mode. There’s an icon for that (two pistols I think?) next to the honour icon when you go to accept the mission.

I was talking about the actual story missions though, they’re great. The dishonourable missions for the latest update revolve around the prep and then execution of a bank job.

Here’s that bug. It’s not a one off, this happens every time unfortunately, so you can’t get gold:

So is there any reason (apart from online) to update the game for people who are still on a version of the game where the glitch to get into New Austin as Arthur isn't fixed?

One of the most recent patches improved the quality of ambient occlusion (i.e. made the game look slightly better): they had good ambient occlusion in the disc version (1.00) but removed it in the day 1 patch for performance reasons. But they managed to get it back in and maintain performance just recently.

One thing I will say is that there’s bugger all to do in New Austin as Arthur... or really in SP at all. There are a lot of online missions down there, but even those feel like they’re barely scratching the surface (even the ones featuring characters returning from RDR1).

Yeh, I just like having the option because of the legendary animals and the ability to complete the challenges that would otherwise be impossible, which I still never got around to doing because I get sidetracked by other games after burning myself out. Still disappointing that there's so many ways the game could be better, and will never be improved cause gotta get that online money.

For me, there’s only 1 thing that lets the SP down, and it’s the bloody controls. The free aim just feels so awful. I think they just don’t have the rendering budget to improve them in any meaningful way though, so it’s a conscious design choice to trade off good and responsive controls for all of the visual goodies that make the game stand above everything else.

I don’t feel that there was a lack of SP content, that’s for sure.

I had free aim on for ~ 50% of the SP and switched it. Took away from the experience

Free aim, no HUD all the way baby, damn beautiful.

The sense of satisfaction you get when you land an arrow between the eyes of an enemy a 100 feet away, or land a headshot with a thrown weapon, is incredible.

Just have to make sure that you turn off camera auto follow, auto level, and adjust the sensitivity settings and minimise the deadzone.

The camera is pretty responsive at Max when hip firing, it does be come slower when aiming, and especially when aiming down the sight.

Have to approach fights far more cautiously and in a different way in free aim which is why I hate online mp so much, in free aim each battle plays like a chess game, you creep forward, they advance, you need cover, they try to flank or draw you out, one fool breaks cover and pays with his life. Even small ambushes or camps can be deadly.

Probably because I am used to it though as I played RDR1, Max Payne and GTAV in free aim. The initial shock and adjustment took a lot of John Martsons ha ha.

Now when the missions throw countless waves of enemies at you, then dead eye is a must.

In fact, one criticism I have with RDR2 is how killing is supposed to be meaningful and hold weight, yet sometimes you would have to kill two or three dozen in a single mission.

Just seems to contradict some of the moments and behaviour of the gang imo.

I did the same, but RDR2 feels so bad in comparison to those games. Even RDR2 deadeye feels bad, whereas in RDR1 it was possibly my favourite element of gameplay.

I don't remember being frustrated by trying to keep my horses or wagons on the road while shooting nearly as much in RDR, it feels as if the keeping to the paths was gutted so it could be a "feature" of cinematic cam. It just feels like while RDR2 added more things, what RDR had id did better in a lot of areas.

+1 freeaim and deadeye for groups.

That was a difficult way to play the game but felt better than the alternative.

On wagons, if you go into aiming mode the wagon will automatically follow the waypoint marker. The downside is that you can’t adjust speed that way

That was a difficult way to play the game but felt better than the alternative.
Snap to target is something I got used to with COD4, so it doesn’t feel that bad to me. The free aim controls in RDR2 though... Jesus. They are so, so bad.

In GTA V I used free aim for SP, and snap to target for Online (made missions against NPCs much faster), although in Online all shooting from vehicles is free aim regardless (and there’s a lot of shooting from vehicles).

By contrast, in RDR2 SP I played about a third of the game in free aim and it just felt so bad. When I switched to snap to target it became more bearable, but still not good.

Ideally, in RDO there’d be no snapping to other players, only NPCs. There’s a card you can get (Slippery Bastard) that will do this for you (i.e. prevent other players snapping to you) when you’re in Dead eye, but people with the Paint It Black card can still paint you in their Dead eye.
