The VR version of Ace Combat 7 was probably the game I was most looking forward to when I pre-ordered my PSVR.

It would be cool to have VR and a decent flight stick combo, but I donít know much about VR specs. Would the resolution be okay? And this would be a game that would require constant and fast head movements, how does VR cope with that in other games?

Resolution is rough. Itís the reason I cancelled my preorder.

    The problem is actually twofold:
    1. Resolution is poor. For a panel that close to your eyeball, a higher res is really required.
    2. In order for VR to work properly without giving you motion sickness, they need to push really high frame rates. To hit those frame rates, big graphical compromises have to be made.

So itís a bit of a double whammy: bad graphics pushed to a low res screen. Thatís not to say it canít still work ok (because of the immersion that full VR tracking gets you), but the drawbacks need to be kept in mind.

Yeah okay then. If there was ever a genre that VR was perfect for, a flight sim/combat game would be it. At some point hardware will meet software, but I am not sure that in 3 years, VR will be a focus.

Coming from an owner I don't think its quite as bad as stiffy reckons, resolution is adequate for gaming imo, ok its not 'retina' but it is 540x920 per eye, the first time I ever tried VR was at a Doom 2 event and it was 160x240 per eye .. it was still fun despite being doom2 and 'fake" 3d.
You will hear the same whines for resolution for oculus and vive too so it will be improved but I dont think its the major issue, its a different type of experience than staring at a flat screen, when you can turn your head one way while facing your body in another you are looking at a window into a much larger screen, sort of.
Rumours for the PS5 and VR2 abound but there is a suitable display on the horizon from a company SOny uses for its phones.

The most concrete info we have on the PS4’s updated design comes from JDI’s announcement of its 3.2-inch display with 1,001ppi and 2160 x 2432 resolution. JDI claims that this display will reduce latency to 2.2msec (compared to >18msec today), allow for 120Hz (same as the PSVR 1), and demand less processing power to achieve better image quality—potentially unlocking a lighter, smaller design for the headset.
The upgraded AMD Ryzen chip that Sony is currently researching could certainly achieve the processing power necessary to support these displays.
so possibly up to 4k per eyeball though whether sony will make a ps5 to be able to generate an 8k image at 90hz+ is debateable and unlikely, will add too much to console cost considering only 10% of buyers would need it.

sony is not dropping vr but upping the game, 2 days ago announcing https://uploadvr.com/sonys-yoshida-p...going-forward/

VR will never be the major focus for playstations imo, it requires you wear a headset, it removes your presence from the room currently though i have seen hints from sony the next gen will fix this, you could have a camera on the headset and a button to show you what is in front of you for example and carry on a normal conversation while wearing the headset and headphones, currently impossible. Its more a solo thing than a family thing and always will be and I dont think that fits sonys aim for playstations for the most part.

I remembered reading this some time ago and this was only with headphones on.. whether true or not i dunno.
warning, disturbing content. dudes wife is raped while he plays games .. then he kills him in true american fashion.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/c..._self/cs6gu9c/

but .. VR now is a rolling ball and will never stop improving from now on .. they also reckon they have found ways to assist motion sickness, which I have never had a major issue with, a few moments of queasiness and 'enough for now' moments after an hour or so with some games. Not sure what exactly, might be something as simple as a fan blowing on your face.
I disagree a bit with flight sims being ideal game, you mostly sit facing forward with a windscreen and drive with a joystick, thats very limiting, VR is suited to 360 degree or at least 180 and like fighting games where both hands are in constant use. swordplay like in skyrim, none of the top VR games currently are driving or flying types of games, I doubt ace combat 7 will make the list either.

oh, the spacex trip to the moon is going to be streamed in hires VR..

With PSVR you need to try it to see if the resolution bothers you. I tried it at the PlayStation pre-launch roadshow and cancelled my pre-order afterwards, but if you donít mind the res then go for it. With the res in mind, I would say that the VR games look probably two gens behind graphically, or at least the launch titles did. But the VR aspects obviously claw the experience back from there.

I'm so keen, mainly because I haven't battlefielded in so long that I'm going through aerial combat withdrawal.

For anyone thinking of picking this up tomorrow, itís available from Amazon for $69, or from JB Hifi for $79. Pre-ordering gets you a PS4 port of the highly regarded PS2 game Ace Combat: Squadron Leader (called Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War in some other countries).

These are the pre-order skins. The F-14 Razgriz one in particular (from Ace Combat 5) looks awesome:

The game launched today, and the reviews are very positive

This was my favourite video review, gives a great look at the game:

Some of the quotes I've seen and liked:

"Finally, a great modern flight combat game has arrived." -Android Central

"Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown brings the series back on course and is a significant return to what it was in its prime: a thrilling interpretation of modern aerial combat that also tells a war story with heart, a conscience, and personal stakes." -GameSpot

"Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is a proper Ace Combat game. Bout time." -Kotaku

A VR review of the game:
"Ace Combat 7’s VR support makes for one of the most convincing, bombastic games you’ll see in a headset. It’s a powerhouse display of roaring engines and teeth-grinding tension that’s never anything less than relentlessly enjoyable. And yet it’s painfully short, over before you can even pinch yourself to see if you’re dreaming. But, to hell with it, it’s left me with a heightened pulse rate, sweaty palms and the biggest grin VR has yet put on my face. If I can’t praise that, then what’s the point? Now let’s start the campaign for more of it." -uploadvr.com

I decided to play through the Ace Combat 5 remaster (the pre-order bonus) before tackling Ace Combat 7. Figured it would be easier to go from the PS2 game to the PS4 game than vice versa

AC5 is great on the PS4 - I mean the ground detail is comical by todayís standards, but I think the aircraft and replays still look respectable, and Iím really enjoying it.

It was on a separate receipt that just had the code on it (along with the instructions for redeeming it).

    Nice

I finished AC5 and it was great - such a fantastic game by PS2 standards, but it still holds up as a PS4 game. They did a great job on the remaster: as I said earlier, the ground detail is comical, but the boost to res so that there are absolutely no jaggies makes a huge difference. I wouldíve happily paid $40 for it on its own.

I moved on to AC7 and Iím enjoying that too. The cutscene quality is great, and the maps and weather are amazing. The plane models are great, as youíd expect. There are some things I think could (and might) be tweaked, but Iíll wait until I finish it to do a proper review, because Iím not very far in and Iíve only just scratched the surface so far. I will say that the mission design has been very good so far, itís a strength of the series (and crucial to the game working without becoming tedious or repetitive).

I gave the MP a good go, because itís (quite cleverly I think) a good way to speed up your SP unlocks (planes and aircraft parts). Iíve been playing the Battle Royal mode rather than TDM, and itís actually a blast. Itís very intense but itís not a complete circle jerk like some some of the flying games are (War Thunder, BF games, etc.). Maybe the greatest compliment I can play it was that I came dead last in one match and still enjoyed the match: thatís the ultimate test of an MP game.

Iíve been playing the value limited mode, where the total value of your jet plus parts canít be more than 2000, and it works really well: you can either take a boss jet with bugger all parts, or take a crappier jet but trick it out. The diversity in special weapons (semi-unique per plane) adds an interesting wrinkle too. I wasnít really expecting to like the MP, but Iím actually really enjoying it as a nice counterpoint to the AI enemies in SP, and Iíve been having a blast alternating between the two.

Iím really hoping they release a two player co-op mode as DLC. I understand they had PvE MP in Ace Combat Infinity, so itís not beyond the realms of possibility.

AC7 story is very similar to AC5 story from memory. A few little differences, but I have hardly had time to play it through. Might have a go at MP if I get a chance this week.

If you or gilly want to get your ace combat (multiplayer) on then give me a yell and Iíll try and join you.

Iím trying to save up enough MRP to buy the YF-23 at the moment, so will be playing multiplayer when I can (I find its much faster to make MRP in multiplayer than SP).

Speaking of the YF-23, I wonder if it wouldíve been cheaper for the Australian government to go in with Japan and get Northrop to build us the (super capable) YF-23 than order the F-35. That wouldíve made Indonesia shit their pants. The F-35 was supposed to be an el cheapo stealth jet, but the development hell itís been in means that youíre paying for beer tastes with a champagne budget.

I'm at the airport ready to go home, so if I see you on when I get on I'll hit you up, sounds like a good way to earn some cash for those expensive planes
