    Default The Documentary thread

I couldn't find a dedicated thread, we need one I reckon.
its my preferred tv viewing and tivo catches a lot for me but I still miss heaps, if you tell it to record all docos you are going to get an awful lot of kids tv.
sbs catch up is a wonderful thing though.
If you find something worth a watch or discussion. heres the place.

going to start with the one I am watching now.

    'Egypt: What lies beneath'

I nearly skipped over it as I thought it was yet another stock hole in the sand dico, but it starts from space, namely using near IR mapping of the desert and finding entire city maps from what is now just sand.
presented by 2 of the 3 'bang goes the theory' presenters, its really an interesting one so far though only part way through.

We watched about 3 quarters of it before switching over to a movie

I was impressed that LiDAR could penetrate that deep. I was then gobsmacked to find out that the scans were from space NOT from a low flying plane!!

One of the 'I was here' graffiti made me LOL. It was dated 2/10/15 or something similar. Kim was like she hasn't even been here yet. Aliens!

Could have been 1415, 1615, 1715, 5515 (spooky) etc etc. Remember people if you sign your name 'I was here' remember to include the century (i.e. 2014 not 14). haha

Great thread. docos are one of my favourite viewing pleasures as well. Didn't even consider SBS on demand for catching up!

Doco's have always been my favourite, even as a kid. Lost count of how many times David Attenborough's Nature of Australia 5 part series wound its way through a succession of VCR's.

not an actual doco, just caught the end of Q&A on ABC, gets replayed tonight at 8:30pm on abc24.
    Bob Katter vs Josh Thomas.
only caught the last 5 minutes but talk about fireworks.

Louis Theroux is one I try to catch for sure, he can bring out what otherwise wouldn't be said.

When we were kings was good, also love the old prohibition era docos, particularly the tales of the gangsters of that time.

Senna is great, saw two eps of that autopsy show on SBS, fascinating but odd fellow.

Life,Africa and planet earth are all regularly rotated on my XBMC as well.

Love a good doco, knowledge is power.

An action documentary I can recommend is 'The Art of FLIGHT'.

It is a very interesting insight into the world of snowboarding, with some of the best snowboarders in the world travelling to remote, spectacular locations. The cinematography is also brilliant.

I've never had an energy drink, and I detest flat-brim cap adorned millennials, but Red Bull Media House work with some of the best action cinematographers in the world to create some brilliant films and web series- Raditudes and The Road to Rampage in particular.

There is also a sequel coming out to On Any Sunday. I'm not a bike person, but it could be interesting nonetheless.

American Grindhouse on ABC now. Love finding old films that I missed, and some of these look killer.

    So much creativity back then.

Schlock! The Secret History of American Movies (2001)

You've heard of Hollywood, a town of tinsel and glamour, the town of Paramount, Columbia and MGM. But there is another Hollywood, a place where maverick independent EXPLOITATION FILMMAKERS went toe to toe with the big guys and came out on top! "SCHLOCK! THE SECRET HISTORY OF AMERICAN MOVIES" takes you behind the scenes with the legendary EXPLOITATION and SEXPLOITATION filmmakers of those golden "DRIVE-IN" MOVIE days. It's sexy! It's strange! And every word is true!

    sunday abc 8:30

    info from imdb and wiki.

The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz (2014)
The story of programming prodigy and information activist Aaron Swartz, who took his own life at the age of 26.

Swartz was involved in the development of the web feed format RSS[3] and the Markdown publishing format,[4] the organization Creative Commons,[5] the website framework web.py[6] and the social news site, Reddit, in which he became a partner after its merger with his company, Infogami.[i]
On January 6, 2011, Swartz was arrested by MIT police on state breaking-and-entering charges, after systematically downloading academic journal articles from JSTOR.[11][12] Federal prosecutors later charged him with two counts of wire fraud and 11 violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act,[13] carrying a cumulative maximum penalty of $1 million in fines, 35 years in prison, asset forfeiture, restitution and supervised release.[14]

Swartz declined a plea bargain under which he would serve six months in federal prison. Two days after the prosecution rejected a counter-offer by Swartz, he was found dead in his Brooklyn, New York apartment, where he had hanged himself.[15][16]

the aaron swartz doco was interesting, what a waste of a future legend. guy shaped the internet for only 10 years and left a legacy that will not be overshadowed by anyone soon.
did not realise he pretty much single handedly stopped SOPA.
missed it on tv twice, good old iview on the ps3.

Caught American Movie on ABC not long ago. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0181288/

It is about a film maker trying to fund his dream project. Something but this drew me in, can't put my finger on why, though it did resonate.

The post on Valiant Hearts reminded me.

'This week 100 years ago' youtube channel follows the progress of WW1 in real time, but delayed a century. Seen a few and they are well done.
The current one is week 32 'The first flame thrower' .. about to watch it.

I tried to view 'our rising oceans' and get video playback not available, searched on youtube for it and only found trailers and hour long click here ads.
is it just a stupid ipad thing ? will try on PC tomorrow.
bildebergs club works but thats vimeo hosted so I can't chromecast it.
youtube is really starting to piss me off lately, seems its ads, region locked, can't play on this device.
