Regarding lock on , i was thinking before that certain control ideas and even schemes should become standard across genres , i think some developers purposely make wacky control schemes to stand apart from the opposition when it should be the gameplay that sets them apart.

In terms of lock on , Z targeting from Zelda should be in every third person game imo , it makes the combat flow better and allows you to focus your attack as well as improving the tactical aspect , i hated the combat in Skyrim for example because i could not lock on and strafe around my target, that would be so sweet in first person view , strafe with your shield raised etc

One thing I didn't realise (not having used the online pawn stuff on my original DD playthrough that my YLOD killed) is that other people see the actual name you put in for your pawn rather than just your moniker. When I do finally get my laser I'll have to change his name to what I wanted (Isgrimnur) rather than what was available among the monikers (I went with Magnus).
When I was in the rift, the only friend pawns that I saw there were foxhound's and oldsarum's. I was specifically looking for yours but wasn't there.

I played DD on my offline console, which took my save game with it to the grave. My main character and pawn from that game are sadly no longer with us

A couple of tips for people starting out so that you don't snooker yourself:

      • The first bandits you meet will kick your arse. Don't panic. Just run like a bitch from them if you have to. You will have your revenge later
      • The first Saurians (lizard men) you meet will kick your arse. Don't panic. They are very weak to Ice so get some Ice enchantments into your party (Ice Boon especially, but Frigor is great too)
      • When you advance the main storyline quests, sometimes the side quests can be automatically failed if you haven't taken them or finished them yet ("Lost and Found" is one quest that many people fail for this reason, also "the Conspirators" but there may be more). So in general, before progressing through the main story quests make sure you have first taken care of all of the major sidequests first.
      • It's a good idea to take every single quest available at the noticeboards as soon as they are available, EXCEPT the escort quests. There's no time limit on any quest AFAIK, so you can take as long as you like for the noticeboard quests (e.g. "kill X number of enemy type Y" or "find X number of item type Z"). There are noticeboards in the Cassardis Inn, the Encampment, and Gran Soren (one in the Inn, two in the Pawn Guild, and one in the Alehouse). When you kick the main story along, all of the noticeboards will generally receive new quests so don't forget to go back and check them.
      • Eventually you will go into the Duke's castle and meet him for the first time. When you do, make absolutely sure that you leave the castle by the front doors that first time, and not a side door.
      • When Caxton asks you to get him an idol, do not give him a Silver or Bronze Idol. Make sure it is gold. Following on from this, the gold idol is a bitch to get. It is worth youtubeing that shit well in advance (no real plot spoilers so don't worry on that front):

Thanks Stiffy. Will keep that in mind. Haven't had a chance to play a lot of it yet. Just escorted the snake head to the castle. Bit disappointed that you can only create one pawn. I was looking forward to rolling with a fully customised posse

Hopefully you finished Lost and Found first...

On the pawn side, if you could roll with a complete party of your own pawns then nobody would ever hire any else's pawns, so I see where they're coming from (and the constantly changing pawns keeps things interesting). You may have noticed that your own pawn will level up with you, but your hired pawns will stay at their current levels. If someone else is levelling up their pawn then I believe you'll need to dismiss that pawn and re-hire it before you see the new level reflected. And obviously if the other person isn't levelling up their pawn then the pawn wil stay at the exact same level (i.e. they only earn experience when being used by their creator, not when they're being hired by someone else).

One other interesting thing: there's a shop in Gran Soren which can create forgeries of most items. You can use that in some creative ways...

      Im using Sarums lady.

Nearly have my all girl foxy boxing brigade!

My wife commented "oh look you can make your perfect woman" when I was making my main.

So I had to give her smaller boobs than I may have otherwise.

Ha ha Magnus got knocked off a cliff but must have glided sown safely , he rejoined a while later and shrugged it off as nothing.

So good to get back into this game , night time as exhilarating and daunting as ever.

Rolling with the AUF pawns, taking down trolls and Chimera like a hot knife through butter , i forgot how to gift equipment but next time i will.
P.S I may have incorrectly rated one of the pawns from Paul, Stif or Sarum , if i did then sorry , if i didn't then this is all a dream.

Technically my pawn is still from DD rather than DA, so I don't think you can send gifts back with him yet anyway (and this would probably go for Sarum's one as well). As I understand it, pawns from the vanilla game will show a box with a red cross if you're playing Dark Arisen. The other person will still get Rift Crystals when you hire the pawn though.

Tell ya what, I'm probably gonna be playing this for many hours... I played it for a couple of hours last night and barely achieved anything.

It is a good game but it has a few pretty big flaws - like you have to travel on foot quite a large distance but you can only run for 30 metres before you need to hunch over and take a breather... And some of the missions just aren't clear, I failed one last night cos I had no clue what I needed to do?!

Overall though, it's good fun, certainly a franchise that could be fantastic if they can raise their game for a next gen sequel (+co-op - the game is crying out for it!).

The travel on foot is the most common complaint in DD by far, and one of the reasons they expanded the Portcrystal network in Dark Arisen. Sweet messaged me about that on the PSN but maybe I should give a quick rundown of the fast travel system here because the game doesn't really explain it.

The fast travel network has two components:
      1. Portcrystals. These are the destinations that you can warp to (like a train station). In Dark Arisen there are fixed Portcrystals outside the gates of Cassardis, and just outside the Pawn Guild in Gran Soren. Then there are other Portcrystals which you can acquire (I think - remember that I haven't played Dark Arisen yet!) and place anywhere in the world.
      2. Ferrystones. These are the items that you activate to use the fast travel system (like a train ticket). When you activate a Ferrystone you get to choose the Portcrystal you want to warp to. If you had an original Dragon's Dogma game save on your machine, then in Dark Arisen you get an Unlimited Ferrystone to use. If Dark Arisen is your first DD outing then you can buy Ferrystones from either Fournival or the Black Cat (I can't remember which; I think it's Fournival) in Gran Soren. They also spawn in the fixed Portcrystal locations where you can pick them up for free (they respawn after a certain period of time has passed, but can take a while).

In terms of the quest, which one did you fail? Was it because you progressed the main storyline a little further?

Amen to adding co-op, even if it was just two players (i.e. two players plus their main pawns for a total of four characters on screen) it would so awesome.

I wandered down to the bottom of a big hole last night and grabbed a crystal at the bottom, I also bought 6 ferrystones (all that was available) 3 from each vendor you mentioned. I haven't used one yet but that will make getting about less taxing. I don't mind walking long distances but gimme the stamina to do it efficiently ffs.

The quest was just a little throw-away event I think, I was passing some harpys that I had killed 5 times previously and they had some dude in a cage. I killed the harpy's then jumped around beside the cage for 15 minutes trying to speak to or release the guy. Nothing happened so I wandered down the hill a bit and it gave me the fail notice - meh. I don't like using guides on the first run so I'll grab a guide for a 2nd run through to pick up anything I miss.

The eternal Ferrystone has certainly made my time in the world much more enjoyable , if i can duplicate it and gift it i will. ( i don't think it is possible though )

I think they originally intended the long traveling as a way to encourage exploration and veering off into mini adventures , even with the improved fast travels i find myself getting distracted by flickering lights in the distance , i need to know what is there ha ha.

All the points mentioned for improvements would be great , another bane for me are the escort missions , the NPCs' are slow to keep up , i try to order them into a safe position if we are ambushed but they sometimes run right into the fray , after a long ass slog to get almost to the destination just to find your traveler slain on the ground Mendozaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Don't worry about that quest, it's randomly generated. There will be many more of them.

As you travel you'll see a couple of different random quests appear: one is to kill a powerful monster nearby, one is to end an ambush, and one is to release a prisoner. They get repeated from time to time and are just there to give you something interesting to do (with a nice little XP bonus) as you travel about. Red Dead Redemption had a similar thing (dude being chased by lawmen, guy asking for help and then stealing your horse, broken wagon with scantily clad woman asking for help, etc.).

They mostly come out at night , mostly...playing without the HUD and mini map makes the darkness even more intense, no lantern, just the ambient sounds....so good.

I jumped on for a little while late last night, and had a quick bash with TP's pawn (Evil Lyn) and reper's (Karen?). Evil Lyn looked very cool, Karen was wearing a butt ugly hood so didn't win the beauty contest

I gave you each a Ferrystone because I don't need them, and TP I also sent Evil Lyn with a piece of clothing I stole off an Ogre – because my main and my pawn are both male it's no good to us

Smajs I haven't used yours yet because she's still double my level

Also for some reason I couldn't see Sweet's pawn at all, are we still on each other's PSN lists?

If anybody is looking for a particular item or bit of kit and can't seem to find it then just let me know. BTW Magnus is now Isgrimnur
