Default Star Citizen - new space sim from Chris Roberts (on PC)

This is an interesting development. Chris Roberts, the guy behind the Wing Commander and Starlancer series (including Privateer and Freelancer) is getting back into gaming after a stint in the movie business. Star Citizen is the game they've just started talking about: it'll be PC only, funded through a mixture of crowd sourcing and private funding.

    Details:
    • CryEngine 3
    • Singleplayer, Offline Co-Op, Online Modes (Akin to 'Demon's Souls')
    • Connect with a huge community online and on the web, sounds kinda similar to an MMO
    • User-generated content is a key feature
    • Due out at some point in 2014, Alpha Testing next year
    • Mash up of Freelancer, Privateer and Wing Commander
    • Political drama inspired by the decline and fall of the Roman Empire
    • Your goal is to get into Squadron 42, kind of like Space Foreign Legion
    • Encourages random exploration of the universe, huge uncharted sections for the taking
    • Seems to be Buy to Play, ala Guild Wars 2, once you buy the game, you can play for free online forever.

    A short FAQ:
Can I have a medium-sized ship with a single launchable fighter aboard? Yes.
Can I get out of my ship and shoot people in first- or third-person combat? Yes.
Can I hijack an enemy ship? Yes.
Can other players hijack my ship? Yes.
Will there be location-specific damage on spaceships? Yes.
Will there be customizable weapons on hardpoints? Yes.
Can I play with a mouse? Yes.
    A gamepad? Yes.
    A joystick? Yes.
Will it support Oculus Rift? Yes.
Will it take user-created content (ships, etc) and sell it, splitting revenue with creators? Yes.
Details and FAQ courtesy of Ashodin at NeoGAF

First trailer (Squadron 42 is the name of Star Citizen's SP campaign; it also has offline co-op and an online component involving a "huge community"):

It's been a long time since there was a proper space sim out. The X series wasn't bad but it was always focused more on the trading side than the combat side of things.

The biggest disappointment here is that there won't be a console version; the dual analog controls are perfect for space sims but I guess the feeling among developers is that these sorts of games wouldn't appeal to the mass market and so the PC is a better platform for them. Given that the release date will most likely coincide with the release of the next gen consoles it seems like a strange omission, but as he says in the pitch video I guess the PC is the platform that Roberts is familiar with, having been away from the gaming industry during the period where consoles really came to the fore.

Chris Roberts has said he's open to the idea of bringing Star Citizen to PS4:
Finally, he has a few kind words for Sony's forthcoming PlayStation 4, and even says he'd consider putting SC on a console under the right circumstances. "The good news is that [the PS4] is essentially a PC, so that means PC owners will get much better ports of console games. I'm not a PC elitist by any means," Roberts explains. "If I could be on the PS4, and they were open, and I could do the updating and all the sort of stuff we're trying to do on Star Citizen, then I would definitely consider putting it on PS4 because it's essentially a PC with a friendlier operating system."

I have been watching with keen anticipation on this one. I have never really played a proper space sim before, but this looks amazing. I must admit I haven't read everything on the website, but its great to hear a possible expansion to the PS4 is on the back of his mind. Very interesting concept...

Squadron 42 is the SP campaign, Star Citizen is the overall game.

As a player you can join the military, which starts the linear (Wing Commander-style) Squadron 42 campaign. Then when you finish that it's back to open world exploration like Privateer/Freelancer/Elite/etc.

With the way it's funded there's no time pressure on them to release, so I wouldn't hold my breath on that front. When the funding starts to dry up they'll just offer new ship packs etc. and people throw money at them

When that stops working they'll develop some urgency. BTW I'm not saying this is a scam or anything, just human nature in this sort of funding environment

From my impression ud have to be a dedicated PC gamer to get into this game. Having to set up a pretty impressive rig to play it.

He has floated the idea of bringing a ps4 copy to market. Would not be as sharp, though opens it up to the masses. Will be interesting to see if it comes about.

A lot of AAA don't actually make a lot of profit. They spend a lot, but dont make much. The "big" games are the exceptions.

I have been getting into this game lately. I am totally on board. Bought my ticket and everything. I thought I would post a couple of videos from gamescom and citizencon as well as the Top Gear parody segment incase anyone has missed it.

The release date is probably still 12 months away at least, but I think the official release will be a pretty arbitrary mark in the middle of a continuum of adding more content, systems and polish. There are lots of super long term plans too, including looking at procedural content generation for planets, but that is a very long ways off. My plan is to wait about two more years (which might be a year after Star citizen 1.00 is launched) and then maybe I will be able to get a big enough, nasty enough PC to run the game smoothly (perhaps with an oculus rift!)

I’ve done some of the dog fighting module on my rather old gaming laptop (which is really struggling even on minimum settings). I can’t be confident, but suspect that the dog fighting is quite good. All I know for certain is that I am very bad at it. There is quite a lot to manage. The multi crew ships have designated consoles for power and shield management, but in a single seat fighter it is all on the pilot.

It looks like there are may different ways to play in the game like trading, bounty hunting, exploring, mining, information running, smuggling, piracy, mercenary work, salvaging, commercial passenger airline piloting, being contracted by player organisations for different jobs.

Doing some exploring with a few likely colleagues is what has me most excited at the moment though.

I was thinking of making an AUF clan entity on the Star citizen network and then hand over the reins if any admin persons get on board. Is that how things usually work?

    Top Gear Parody

Gamescom multicrew demo. A group of players head out to salvage a derelict bomber.

Citizencon Demo of the 2.0 Alpha which should be surfacing for everyone to try before the end of the year. The different pieces of the puzzle stitched together for the first time: multicrew ship combat, FPS combat, EVA exploration. I think the Eva part on the satellite looks so atmospheric. I can imaging running into a xenomorph in there!

Lol, I know the feeling. Fortunately, it looks like you will have plenty of time to save up for one before it is out. I am very much hopeful that lots of AUFers get into this one.

Since piracy is a supported play style, and since faction reputation is likely tied into clan (or organisation in SC language) reputation, I have started suspect that AUF might need more than one clan entity if some people want to have their slice of pie(racy) and eat it too without smearing the rep of the more puritanical types in the clan (probably me).

I think that last sentence was legible.. ?

Anyway, lets workshop some names for a (evil) sister organisation.

How about Australian Equal and Opposite Forces?

I am now actually building a PC for this game. The PC will be completed in just over a month. Theres probably a thread for building PCs, but ill just mention my specs now
    CPU: Intel Core i7 4790k
    Motherboard: MSI Z97-GAMING 5 ATX LGA1150
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX980 4GB
    RAM: Kingston HyperX 16GB

Should be more than enough to run this game. All up the computer will be just under 2000$, and will have the money by the end of Feb

Anyway. Heavily into this game already. Choosing ships to buy at the moment. Im pretty hellbent on buying the Constellation Andromeda at the moment. Looks like it has a fairly large cargo hold for a multi purpose ship. I am not interested in buying the 1 or 2 person ships. So the Andromeda will set me back around 400$. Ive looked at some other ships, and if they were available, and I had the money to buy more than one, I would. The 890 Jump is a luxury yacht, looks beautiful inside and out. Would serve as a great crew HQ. Its not available at the moment, but was originally around 600$ USD i think. The other cool luxury ship is the Constellation Pheonix. About half the size of the 890 Jump, half the storage, half the usefulness and half the price. Unfortunately both ships really dont serve a big purpose outside a cool looking ship and possible HQ. But would still be nice to have.

Hopefully you will easily be able to be a part of two different factions on this game. Superlap and a couple of the guys that have left AUF are also interested in this game, but I would also like to play with AUFers. Since there still seems to be a rift between the two groups, ill be jumping from faction to faction depending on whose online. Kind of sucks I have to do that, but theres not much else I can do.

Very interested in this game. Was looking into random parts of the game, and came across an article on RSI about people carriers. It would serve a small purpose in the game world, but the amount of detail they have gone into for small things is incredible. If you are interested in this game, i'd take a read into the following article, because its just amazing.
    https://robertsspaceindustries.com/c...nger-Transport

Thinking of a cool way to get a new ship. Board as a passenger on one of these people carriers, and kill everyone on board Hijack the ship, and its all yours. Melt it down and buy a better ship. The possibilities are endless.

Woah, that hardware definitely looks Beefy enough. Actually, since I posted in November, the alpha performance has come a long way. It is now very playable with the gtx560m in my laptop.
The constellation is definitely the prototype multi-crew ship and should be well suited to you if you arenít ever planning to fly alone. You might find you are a bit hamstrung if you need to fly it on your own though, else you will need to hire some NPCs to man some of the other consoles. Can I ask what sort of activities you are thinking of getting up to in the game?

For myself I have a Reliant Kore for a flexible starter ship as well as an Avenger Titan. I wouldnít have bought the Avenger, except I wanted something that can stand in as a competent fighter for me to practice with in the dogfighting module until the game comes out (which could still easily be more than 2 years away). I would eventually like to have a taste of all the different gameplay options but will probably lean into mercantile and exploration type activities to start with. The Avenger has room to put some prisoner cells in the back and should give me some early options in bounty hunting and being an escort fighter too.
I have decided not to buy any more ships before the game releases. I think starting the game with some of the fanciest ships in the game would be a lot like starting an rpg already at the level cap. I worry it would take away a lot of the feeling of progression of going from your first starter ship up to owning big tertiary flagships or capital class warships.
The first ship I will be working towards owning once the game comes out will probably be the Freelancer DUR variant. It looks like it will be great for exploration and boutique long range courier work. Four manned consoles in the cockpit, a docking collar and a manned turret too if you wanted a cheaper multi-crew option than a constellation.
After that, there are so many other ships that are alreaty calling my name. The Banu Merchantman, The Carrack, the Corvette, The Sabre, The Vanguard, The Orion, the Endeavour, The XiíAn Khartu-Al Scout, So many! I like how a lot of the bigger and specialist ships require a lot of cooperation. Like the big mining ships or research platforms.

It is actually fairly easy to find a Constellation Andromeda in the alpha right now so you could buy a cheap game package and then try out a lot of ships in game before deciding to buy something bigger. You can also rent a lot of ships to use in the dogfighting module with in game currency that you earn from playing the dogfighting module online, so you could try out a lot of other ships that way too. Another nice thing is that you can melt any ship you have at the moment into cash you can use to purchase another ship with no penalty so you can switch between owning all the ships in the game with no penalty for doing so. I suggest picking up at least a cheap game package by the end of the month though. CIG have foreshadowed that Star citizen and the Squadron forty two single player game will need to be purchased separately after the end of Jan.

I think it will be fairly easy to navigate the one clan rule so we can all play together. Different organisations can become allies and can also contract other organisations or freelance players (or NPCs) to work for them. ^__^

Where I see a problem is more to do with criminal activity. For example, if you liked (as you described above) hijacking passenger liners and flushing all the passengers into space to die then you would become a fairly notorious pirate and the UEE would have a big bounty on your head. Human and NPC bounty hunters would both pick up contracts to take you out and you would have a hard time operating out of UEE controlled space. You would be prudent to work out of a lawless system like Spider for example. Now if you and I were in the same Org, then my standing with the UEE might suffer, I might get less work, and the cops might come knocking at the door. I could be accused of being a member of a criminal organisation.
The details havenít been fleshed out, but that is why I was thinking that AUF might need more than one Org entity to accommodate different types of players.
