    Three types of drives:

    Regular HDD (spindle): slow, cheap.
SSHD (hybrid): has both a spindle disk, and some flash memory to speed things up. Faster than a regular drive, but more expensive.
    SSD: very fast, very expensive.

Yeah SSDs are very expensive. SSHDs like the one that Loco mentioned are much more reasonable.

If you're running out of space, SSHDs are the go because they give you better performance and you can still get big ones at a reasonable price.

SSDs are obviously the ultimate in terms of performance, but they're so expensive that the big capacities become a little bit ludicrous.

Don't forget though that the PS4 supports external drives now as well. I have a big internal SSHD, and a small external SSD: I copy the games I'm currently playing to the small SSD so that they load really fast, and keep everything else on the SSHD.

It depends on what your current drive is, what your new drive is, how they're each going to be used, and what they currently have on them.

We have a thread on PS4 HDD upgrades that should help you out:
    http://www.ausforces.com/showthread....S4-HDD-Upgrade

Are you sure that you don't want to retain the data from your current HDD apart from save files? Are you happy to redownload all of your games and their patches? Not worried about keeping game captures, themes, etc?

I thought the same then realised there was a bunch of Destiny footage and photos I should have saved

Game downloads etc didn't bother me at all it was just photos and vids I should have thought twice about.

Also make sure you download the right update for the PS4 it'll be about 900mb from memory last time.

I had some stuff on there but didn't particularly need it as most was put on YouTube account.

I can swap drives again that's no big deal I suppose

Yeah I made that mistake at first and was furious at why it wasnt doing what it was told lol.

If you go to put old HDD back in I'm pretty sure it'll make you format the drive before you can use it, that's why you need to copy anything you want first.

No the same HDD put back into the same machine should work I think (not that I've ever tried it), provided it hasn't been messed with in any way.

    EDIT: Assuming no firmware updates.

Yea wasn't sure if it would try format or if it read the HDD and saw that there was firmware on it and was ok.

I just edited my post above right as you replied. All of the encryption stuff should be fine because it's the same drive in the same machine. The only tricky thing would be if there's a firmware update; if that got installed on the new drive, I think the old drive might be out of luck: it'd be out of step and I don't know if there'd be a way to bring it up to speed without formatting.

Yeah fair enough, just wanted to make sure that anyone doesn't lose stuff if we can prevent it.
