Default The Official ISP Discussion Thread

I figured there is so many different ISP threads going around its hard to choose one when someone has a question to ask about their or other ISP's, hence the creation of this thread.

So to kick it off i have a question about Dodo, are they any good?

I'm with Internode atm getting ADSL2+ speed with 60GB and paying bundled with phone $80. But i've realised that 60GB is shit all and i need more, the best i could find on various sites is Dodos unlimited plan with the same speed, obviously unlimited data and $10 more.

I'm guessing Dodos support want be 100% of the time an aussie like Internode is but that's a small price to pay for unlimited quota, the only thing i want to know is if they suck as an ISP in any other regard?

    Thanks

I couldn't really say to be honest mate, while i dont have any experience with Dodo personally, but i would seriously stick with a company that has their own infrastructure in place, or at least a provider that purchases their wholesale net off a good quality provider. Looking into setting up my own branded ISP, ive found a lot of little common misconceptions about ISP's and plans, such as TPG etc, where they throw as many connections down the one line (persue') which will give you a fluctuation in your speeds. This is how they can offer a cheap price for such extravagant download limits.

At the end of the day it will come down to only a few things for a customer: downloads, quality of connection, customer service and price.
Personally while i am with bigpond, (dont be hatin) i have been ripped off regarding the price factor, however I have had a high quality of a stable, and fast connection, high downloads and pretty good customer service experience, so the price factor doesn’t really come into affect for me that much.

Stick with internode and stop downloading so much gay porn.

On a less serious not my brother is with dodo and he doesn't really like them. Check out whirlpool and see if you can find who is providing the best service to your area.

Personally I'd say if you're after big download quotas at the expense of all else, you should consider TPG. If quality of your connection is a factor then stick with Internode.

    Quoted for truth.

Tpg have great deals but lack in technical support and quality of connection (learnt from experience).

FWIW I'm with TPG. For me the downsides were outweighed by the advantages in terms of my own situation and quality of life

If it were up to me alone I would probably be with Internode.

FYI - TPG now counts uploads and downloads on all it's plans. Internode does as well, but for an extra $10 a month (the "power pack") they add a few features one of which is not counting uploads.

How close to the exchange are you stiff? I'm about 3.5 km. I've read within 1 km TPG are outstanding anymore than that and it starts goin downhill fast.

For the first 3 months didn't have a problem then started getting a lot of packet loss ( about 70% ) during peak hours. Tpg couldn't fix the problem so I opted out and went with bigpond and haven't had a problem since though my router drops out alot playing BFBC2 this may be because of having the Aussie servers only or may be due to overheating issues I'm unsure yet.

For quick comparison of ADSL2+ plans

    TRY THIS (excluding line rental)

Unfortuntately it shows most ISPs are now counting uploads as well

Can anyone please tell me what companies DSLAM ports Internode use?

I just moved states (to qld), signed up for internode adsl 2+, not sure if theyll be able to connect me though, did a whirlpool search and it says adsl 2+ is enabled by telstra adsl 2+, "click here to see companies that use telstra equipment" or something like that, and i click on it and internode isn't on that list. but according to wikipedia, internode uses telstra, but sometimes optus when naked dsl.

Node use their own network "agile" if its available. But i think they use Telstra otherwise.

Im with dodo and i thought they would of been shit im on contract for 2 years at $30.00 a month. Unlimited download and speeds. I get about 1.7mbps a second which was a big shock for me and only upload at about 70kbps...
Ive been with Telstra adsl2+ internet at $100 a month and only ever got about 100kbps a second - 40gb: 20gb off 20gb on
Ive been Telstra wireless $prepaid and got speeds of about 120kbps - preapid
Ive been with TPG adsl2+ at speeds of 700kbps at $79.95 - 120gb
Ive been with Optus adsl2+ and got speeds of about 400kbps at $89.95 a month -80gb
Ive been with Optus (3G) wifi internet at speeds of about 600kbps at $79.95 and another $80 to buy more download quoter, might i add its counted at $20 a hit and its counted in dollars not download amounts - 16gb a month
Ive been with unwired fixed wireless like at $89.95 at speeds of about 120kbps and another another $50 to buy more download quoter - 80gbs off peak 30gbs on peak
Cant remember all oof peak and on peak data rates
Im currently with dodo best deal and speeds ever. And if your wondering all these connections ive had are in sydney eastern suburbs like coogee, Mascot, Randwick, Bondi, Glebe(central) and Wollstonecraft north shore
    Currently Bondi with dodo.

I'm with TPG in northwest Sydney. Has been ok, except if something goes wrong. Pretty rare but both times at my current place tech support is a circus, though the American accented call desk is sufficiently bemusing not to lose my cool.

Both issues were Telstra related, in terms of "noisy" phone lines. I found that once I got elevated to Level 2 techies, they knew what they were on about.

I stuck with internode, got in one of there old plans and now have 200GB a month, they are without a doubt the fastest and most stable ISP ive come across. Never drops out, i get DL speeds of 11mb/s and line speeds of 2mb/s.

    Internode FTW!

I was previously with TPG because they were great as long as you never needed support. Got to the point where I needed support too often, so I switched. I also got a bit unsettled with TPG because their database used to get corrupted quite often and I could see someone elses details in my account.
    'Node is perfect so far.

    Lower North Shore (Sydney)

From memory I sync at 19mbs down and 2.4mbs up (using annex M)

Guessing so- I just ran this test http://broadband.smh.com.au/Broadband/Speed-Test and got 6.95 DL and .7x UL. I'm with Telstra as they are the only provider in my area (rural-residential)- some issues occassionally with line quality and phantom calls/crossed lines, but generally quite good. Phone and internet is around $90.

My parents are with Telstra in an outer suburb of Brisbane (but 50km's or so closer than me)- on cable they seem to get 15-20mbs, noticeably faster than my connection!

I highly recommend this. Kilograms and litres are among my favourite units of measurement – possibly even in my top ten – but I thought if I used them it might confuse people. Personally when comparing internet plans I always convert to litres and long for the day when all ISPs quote their offerings in litres as well as megabits.

I just found out that they offer this in my area so looks like I might have finally found a decent NBN alternative (given that my area isn't scheduled for rollout any time in the next 3 years). It's called "BigPond Ultimate Cable" if anyone is interested with a theoretical max of 100Mbit/s (I currently get 3-4Mbit/s on ADSL2+). At the moment they're doing a bundle deal where you get the cable internet with 200GB (256kbit/s when shaped), free installation and cable modem, bundled phone line, and free calls to all landlines and Telstra mobiles for $90/month.

Nope! I called them up and asked "can I get it?" and they told me "yes you can."

Isn't the NBN coming to your neighbourhood any day now?

I probably won't be getting it till maybe June 2014 by the looks of it.

Found a link if anyone is interested about telstra cable, good option if NBN isn't coming to a street near you any time soon. Also heres a link to find out if NBN is in your area yet.
