Default Oriental Celluloid - discussions about Asian films, and all things Japan =)

Out of all the corners of the globe it is Asia that has produced (and still does) the most memorable films I have ever seen. Be it 1920's Japanese silent films from Ozu or contemporary work coming out of Korea from Chan-wook Park or Joon-ho Bong.
The largest and 2nd most populated country in Asia is probably the most productive understandably, and there are plenty of brilliant films to be found if you do a little searching. In particular I am a fan of Kar Wai Wong and Yimou Zhang. Then there are the numourous martial arts and action films churned out each year.
Vietnam has their share of great filmmakers, Anh Hung Tran is one I have seen some work from, and Malaysian born Ming-liang Tsai also has made some great films. Of course India has it's own history with cinema, from the classics right up until modern bollywood dramas.
Anyway, if you dig that extra flavour of Asian cinema that Hollywood cannot replicate, whether it's classic or contemporary - arthouse or martial arts, recommend us some films.

My top 25 Japanese films (from my DVD/BRD collection):

Unfortunately the only cinema I have of asia is from the Japanese filmmaker Takeshi Kitano, not so bad I guess because they are still great.

    Dolls

    Zatoichi
    Takeshis'

All three of them are vastly different and could each appeal to different tastes if the viewer isnt fazed by long silent takes. Superb atmosphere.

    Awesome thread!

I should check out some of these films. Sadly the only Foreign film I've seen in recent times are Ong Bak & Ong Bak 2 (Yeah I know, its not exactly a classic).

Haven't seen much lately but I do recommend the Japanese flick
    GOEMON
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goemon_%28film%29

It's a a good take on a robinhood like character in Japan's history.... Chocs might know. Got some good direction and contains CGI stuff.... pretty good

MY wifey saw Connected - an Honky Film and she said it was pretty good.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connected_%28film%29

Here's another one I recalled was good.... arguably one of Taiwan's best films?? Cape No. 7 (Taiwan's 2nd most grossing film after Titanic... although I assume Avatar would have overtaken them by now)

Im Australian and I dont rush out to see Aussie flicks. Only one I'll see countless times during my life will be The Castle. I live here so I see no point in losing myself in it's cinema.

Does your missus like Asian cinema Kobes?!

Her favourite film is Nobody Knows by Koreeda - she likes the dramas, she's not into the arty ones or the classics. I am still trying to get her to watch Tokyo Story with me, she will like it I reckon.

She also loves the Infernal Affairs Trilogy, The Host, Memories of Murder quite a few actually. And she loved Still Walking too

I only saw one Aussie film in 2009 and it was a pearler - Samson and Delilah. I don't see heaps of local films either tbh, will watch Bran Nu Daeu (sp?) tho...

@rezn8 - We can discuss flying ping pongs if it keeps you here?!?

@vendetta - I haven't heard of those mate! I haven't seen many Manga films, Blood the Last Vampire is one I enjoyed.

@snicks - I haven't got to Chinese and Korean films yet, but Red Cliff was my #2 film for 2009, and I loooooove the Vengeance trilogy - I agree, great atmosphere. You should see Thirst, the latest film from that director, about a priest who becomes a vampire!!

haha I been stirrin it up all arvo on the boards.

In all seriousness never really watched many Asian films. A few of Jet Li's early, non Hollywood films and one recently about Genghis Khan called 'Mongol' (thouroughly enjoyed it aswell). Pretty sure it was an Asian production, it definitely wasn't American or British.
Apart from those few I know that Hollywood has enjoyed re producing Asian films in the last 5-10 years.

    EDIT. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongol_(film)

Here is a link for the Mongol film I mentioned (I think I did it right? first time i've inserted a link). Turns out it was a co production between European and Asian countries. Apparently a trilogy is planned and the second is in pre production, slated for a 2010 release.
I recommend the film and I'm pumped for the next two.

Ok so I've tested the link and it doesn't work =(

Fixed your link rezn8, it had 2 http:// 's in it...

I have heard of but haven't seen that film, will check out a trailer

@Choc - let me know what you think of Ponyo, I found it more of a kids film than the rest of Miyazaki's recent work so I was a little let down by it. Being a new dad you might get a kick out of it maybe?

Btw, did you have a son or a daughter? I bet he or she is very cute, being half aussie half Japanese! I have an american friend who's girlfriend is Japanese, and they had a daughter - she's very cute...

****king awesome!!! I'm into martial art movies.... and I thought IP MAN was better than most/all of Jet Li's stuff

There's a sequel in the works for IP MAN after the success of the first movie. Won best movie at some asian award a couple of years back.

    Am downloading IP Man

@R3P - I have seen New Police Story, it was good hey... have you seen the old Police Story films? I haven't yet. You should check out Infernal Affairs if you haven't already, it's my favourite crime drama from Hong Kong - was remade as The Departed by Scorsese. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0338564/. The 2 sequels are great also, esp the 2nd film.

@Chiips - checking an SPL trailer out in a sec, have heard of it never seen a trailer

EDIT - read a review, gonna look for a torrent. I love being able to watch a torrent for these films and then buy them if I like them

I will have to torrent some shit.

From what I understand Crime story was the prequel to New Police Story; although they were made about 15 years apart.

Also now I remember another Korean one I saw. It had the Korean chick from lost in it. Set in the countryside. She was married having an affair. Was decent film.

I saw the New Police Story on Foxtel last year actually, not bad. The young Jackie Chan had plenty of sick stunt moves in his older films

Also one of my favourite series.... most might have heard about it already, Jet Li's Once Upon a Time in China. Some kickarse martial art action in em. Jet Li was in his prime, he's much slowly and less flexible in the newer hollywood films.
