download the FITNIO app for iPhone, it shows you where you're running on GPS and distance, time, speed etc.

Interval Training is the best but would be good to mix it up with some long distance running to keep your body guessing....maybe even rotate some running days with a bike session to give your joints a break from hard surface.

Glucosamine tablets taken daily are excellent for your joints, I have been taking them for a while and I don't feel as stiff anymore especially during winter

Yeah I did the research which is why I mentioned it! The cool thing about the 3GS is you don't even need the receiver attachment, all of that circuitry is built in (all you need is the transmitter). Sadly I'll be stuck with my (old) nano and receiver attachment.

With my back history rowing is out of the question unfortunately - the body position is no good. It makes riding a bike tough for me as well. When I first had my back issues swimming was the only form of exercise I could do, and it's good but I do miss (and prefer) running. The HIIT stuff I might get into down the track. We'll see.

Thanks for all the tips and advice guys, there's heaps of good stuff in here!

So you want to start running .. with back issues?? Running puts a lot of stress on your back mate ... its high impact for the whole body even when running on the sand/grass.

Rowing is virtually no impact on your back as long as you have the correct technique which means you dont slump forward but keep your back perfectly straight .. then no probs. It can stress out your lower back if bad technique and if your hammering it night and day.. but for the average joe its fine. In fact .. its actually helped me with my back pain as it promotes circulation in that area + strectches the shoulders and REALLY works your abominals - which support your back

Yeah I had a prolapsed (slipped) disc between L4 and L5. It's been years though, I've been playing ice hockey so impact isn't an issue any more. As strange as it sounds the worst thing is poor posture! If I'm sitting without any back support then I get pain, and slouching forwards is the worst. I find that when using the rowing machine or using a bicycle, as soon as I start to fatigue I start to slouch forwards and that is a problem. With running there's no risk of that. I'll see how I go, although my quads and calves are a bit sore today I have no back issues so it's looking pretty good.

I find swimming a better cardio workout.
I do sprint sessions at my local footy oval three times a week, only to maintain my turn of speed as I took up soccer last year.
Me and a mate use the length of the field and we sprint 50 metres full pace then jog 50 turn and sprint 50 jog 50 and so on. We log how many metres we do and step it up monthly.

40 minutes running is supposed to be the best training time for distance running, that should get you about 8-10 Km, running for longer than that starts to fatigue your body. As R3P said, different speeds/intensity and different surfaces improve youre endurance. If you're running further then 10Km (City 2 Surf), build up to it for about 6 weeks before but drop back to the 40 minute guide for the last week or two.

City2 Surf is a bitch, I've ran it the last 4-5 years and I can't break the hour mark. Bridge Run is much more fun...

I've never found it easy Heartbreak hill is well named...

I never seem to train up to it properly and Ive been between 62 & 64 minutes every time I've ran it. The only benefit about running it the 2nd time is that you get to start in the red group (1st gun) so you don't get stuck behind the back end of a pantomime horse or some shit.

it's in the dandenong mountains, really good workout, most of the footy teams do it in pre-season. Even walking up it is a challenge.

I've done it a few times for soccer pre-season, once our coach made us do it twice in a row.....everybody hated him after that

If it's any consolation Loco, I did 23km in the first week but then had to stop because of ITBS (it was affecting my skating). I'm seeing a specialist to figure out what's causing it and then hope to be back running soon. In the meantime I've just upped my hockey training to compensate.

the biggest problem for me is my work. i work 4 days a week but 11 hr days and all i do is pack 30kg bags of horse feed all day long. i prob pack upto 50 tonne a day so by the end of it i dont feel like doin much thats why i love gaming so much i get to sit here and just use my hands. ive been doin it since i left school (10 years now) and believe me when i say it fucks your body up. dont get me wrong im fairly fit (even if im kinda chubby) and pretty bloody strong (not in the weights department but i can lift my brother over my shoulder and he's 150 kg) running for me was always a problem as im an asthmatic aswell have been since birth. i know swimming is best for asthma but it doesnt interest me swimming laps all day long or even for 5 minutes.

i do enjoy running you get that feeling as if you cant go any further then bam you get this energy from nowhere and you push hard even if its only 500m. i mean i dont run that far just yet maybe 2km but thats good for a guy who can barley touch his toes because of back probs from lifting heavy bags all day.

you dont need to run for very long... atm im trying to optimise myself for 1500m so i just put on a 5 min song and try to get as far from home as i can. i feel as done after this as i do after most of my 6/12km runs.

As i posted in another thread or it might have been this thread on the previous page, i am by no means a long distance runner. I have just never been able to do it. I can't withstand many things to do with endurance (). Anyway, since i have been going to the gym lately and working on my legs and upper body strength, i decided i needed to incorporate some cardio into that as well. So lately i have been going for runs 2-3 times a week which is a lot for me. The first time i did it i only ran about 2.5km and it absolutely killed me. I got back and was almost passed out. Was light headed, my breathing was fucked but my legs were fine. It makes me think my problem is all to do with my breathing and aerobic endurance. The next couple of times i went for a run it has improved dramatically though. I didn't feel anywhere near as tired and i felt like i could go for longer if i had to. There is a huge difference from one run to the next in my opinion when you're initially starting out.
