not sure if anybody but me is excited about this, but I just got this email from Criterion:

    Dear Criterion Collection Newsletter subscriber,

We’ve got some exciting news for this fall, and we wanted you to hear it first.

Our first Blu-ray discs are coming! We’ve picked a little over a dozen titles from the collection for Blu-ray treatment, and we’ll begin rolling them out in October. These new editions will feature glorious high-definition picture and sound, all the supplemental content of the DVD releases, and they will be priced to match our standard-def editions.

    Here’s what’s in the pipeline:

    The Third Man
    Bottle Rocket
    Chungking Express
The Man Who Fell to Earth
    The Last Emperor
    El Norte
    The 400 Blows
    Gimme Shelter
    The Complete Monterey Pop
    Contempt
    Walkabout
    For All Mankind
    The Wages of Fear

Alongside our DVD and Blu-ray box sets of The Last Emperor, we’ll also be putting out the theatrical version as a stand-alone release in both formats, priced at $39.95. Our Blu-ray release of Walkabout will be an all-new edition, featuring new supplements as well as a new transfer; we will also release an updated anamorphic DVD of Nicolas Roeg’s outback masterpiece at the same time.

exciting news for cfans of such films - even though I have already spent a few grand on their DVDs probably... but imagine these classics in 1080p *8O

yeah, chungking is great - Kar Wai has some beautiful films... In the Mood for Love would be my first choice for Blu-Ray - god damn I love that film... I would hand over my testicles for that to have a perfect 1080p transfer!

400 blows is truffaut, but I will let you off on that one

i have held off on buying SD DVDs since I got the PS3, and this is the reason why - these films would all be coming to Blu sooner or later... but I think nobody thought it would be this soon!

do it timmy - at least rent one to check out... rent something like casino royale, or ratatouille... they will show you the capabilities...

Hey Kobe, Sorry I forgot about this thread. Dracula is actually pretty good in regards to picture quality. The colours in it are great, There is a scene in the movie that some flowers are sitting on a table and the colours look amazing on them. I know that is just something really small but the small details are what turns something good into something great. I was also surprised about the quality of Dirty Dozen as well, Its from 1965 i believe so you can tell its an old movie but it to looks good and is also a great movie.

I was going to pick up Die Hard 4 but I heard they are releasing a Die Hard Blu Ray Boxset so I will wait for that. The G.F has banned me from buying blu ray and PS3 games at the moment so it may be awhile before my collection continues to grow.

Also a little bit of info you guys, Transformers should be coming to blu in September and the Lord Of The Rings trilogy is coming but unconfirmed when it will be ready.

Edit: I have view blu ray on a 480p projector (through the ps3 set to 1080i. I would explain all the upscaling and downscaling but cant be screwed to right now) and also my brand new 40" Sony W Series (1080p) and my parents higher end 1080p Samsung (by higher end it has 100hz motion flow tech whereas the Sony W Series doesn't). Blu looks good on SD you can slightly tell its an upgrade from DVD in regards to colours and sharpness. I didn't notice too much of a difference between my parents samsung and my sony but blu looks hot at 1080p. Now I just need my Sony 7.1 receiver (to replace my 6.2) that decodes HDMI audio and I am set.

Edit 2: Sorry Kobe I forgot to mention Hostel 1 and 2. In on what I think of the movies Hostel 1 is the better. Now in regards to Blu Rays, Improved picture and colours as you should already know on Hostel 1. Hostel 1 was the first BD I watched on my Sony W series so I was paying close attention to the picture quality as I mentioned earlier I was using a 480p native res projector set to receive a 1080i signal before the 1080p tv and the picture on 1080p is better :P . I haven't watched hostel part 2 on BD yet but I will let you know when I find the time. In regards to special features Hostel 1 doesn't have any listed on the box but I think there are some on it so I will have to update with them when I get a chance.

Hostel Part 2 Special feature list (as listed on the case)
Commenty by Director Eli Roth, Exec Producer Quentin Tarantino and Associate Producer Gabriel Roth.
    2 Additional Audio Commentaries
Behind the scenes feature on the making of the movie. Hostel Part II: The Next Level.
    Deleted Scenes
3 additional behind the scenes featurettes
    Plus more

Edit 3: Alot of random edits to fix missing words and spelling mistakes. I need a proof reader.

LOL Quan - no probs mate...

    Die Hard Box Set? NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOO!

hmmmm... might check out bram stoker's - I love that film... and I loved Hostel 1 & 2, might check them too... the wife admits she loves Blu as much as ma (or as she claims "more than me"), so luckily she has been happy to make a few purchases of late...

I bought the original DVD box set from America, and now I just bought DH4.0 on Blu... bugger that!

I watched Black Hawk Down last night, on Blu of course , and found it to be jaw-droppingly detailed in certain shots... it ranges from stunning picture, to slightly above SD DVD quality - which was to be expected, coz of the intended look of the film... some scenes were simply amazing in regards to detail and clarity... definitely worth a look imo.

I realised I now have 23 Blu-Rays!! (well, 3 of them are on the way from amazon actually)

    Here's my list now:

    2001: A Space Odyssey
    Black Hawk Down
    Blade Runner
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
    Closer
    Day After Tomorrow, The
    Departed, The
Die Hard 4.0: Live Free or Die Hard
    Dog Day Afternoon

    Fifth Element, The
    Goodfellas
    Host, The
    I am Legend
Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior

I love Black Hawk Down (I love pretty much all war movies) but did notice a fair few scenes look kinda grainy. I am unsure if its the film they used for shooting the movie or what. I wouldn't mind getting my hands a few more war BD's but the amount of money I have spent getting the movies on DVD I am unsure. I have already doubled up on a couple of movies that I now own on BD and DVD and Black Hawk Down is an example of that.

Here is the info on the Die Hard Box Set

yeah, I've double dipped on a few too... oh well, gotta have certain movies in the best format I reckon - the things that will hurt will be lord of the rings... those extended editions from USA cost me a fair bit, but I will most def replace them too... shite happens - I will prob always be spending $ on movies I guess...

Hahaha The Lord Of The Rings is going to hurt me as well as I currently own All 3 extended editions that I use to watch and also if you remember the Collectors Edition Box they released with each movie I also own all 3 of those.

Did some more research on the Die Hard box and it is currently out in the US but is region locked. From what I can tell Die Hard 3 is owned by a different company in the UK so that make cause some issues on us getting a box set here.

watched 3:10 to Yuma last night - very nice indeed... the local version lost the PCM track from the USA version, but this doesn't affect me with my amp anyway... great flick, and awesome video transfer - a tiny bit soft at times, and it showd the lack of camera focus at times too...

    3:10 to Yuma:
    Film - 9.5/10

it's a crime drama, brilliantly acted by phil seymour hoffman and ethan hawke, and brilliantly written and directed by the great sidney lumet who died a week or 2 ago... i think he wrote it anyway...

2 brothers rob their parents' jewelry store... they can get the jewels, and their parent's can claim the insurance... that is all I will say...

I don't wanna tell you too much about it, coz I want you to see it when you get a chance... one of the best from 2007 imo... up there with No Country and There Will be Blood...

No shit - I havent seen it as a renter yet.... dammit man I'll check it out for sure. Think I may have read a review in an Empire magazine about it actually - but i read a lot of film and game mags - gotta do something in my lunch hour eh!! hanging around bookshops and newsagencies works for me..

... pet hate: the nosy newsagent .. you know the one that pretends their not watchin but is actually sneering quietly to themselves while your trying to err... choose a magazine to buy (but never actually do! Fuck that!!) ... *I despise guys that just go to a mag shop and pick something off the shelf and buy it - takes me at least 20 minutes of decent browsing. If a shop owner asked me "...are you gonna by that or read it here mate??" Id never go back... A woman did that to me a few months ago .. I said " nah just reading it...that allright..." and kept going hahaha!!! *She was like "Oh.. right."

so what this go to do with movies... fuck all! Just thought Id mention it.

Ive got "The Italian" out to watch at the moment - supposed to be great. You seen it?

yeah, have heard of the italian - the russian film you mean? looks really good I reckon... I've seen some great russian films - have you seen any by andrei tarkovsky?

i hope it is the russian film that you are talking about LOL

I watched Pan's Labyrinth on Blu last night - beautiful detail, the costumes/props/make-up/sets are so meticulous the Blu is the only way to see the film imo (without sounding snobby)

    Film 10/10
    Video 9.5/10
    Audio 9.5/10
Extras 6/10 - from what I have seen is on the disc

    this was the USA disc.

PS - I ordered another one(!) - The Descent, which is now on it's way also!!!!! artyman: *:supz: *

"The Descent" rocks Kobes, nice buy. They are making a sequel with the original cast too, how? Gawd knows but the Yank ending was different to ours so left the door open to the dreaded follow-up story (back to the cave we go I suspect). Watched Pans on Foxtel a few weeks back, most excellent even if only in SD (ya' snob!!!).

I'm hanging out for Band of Brothers on Blu-Ray. I'm told it WILL eventually be relased on Blu-Ray. Easily my favourites series/movies/whatever you want to call it. I had the box set on DVD but I lent it to someone and it never came back *:crybaby:

My blu-ray collection is pretty miniscule:
    Casino Royale
    Ghost Rider
    Spiderman 3
Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire
Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix
    Starship Troopers

First 3 came with my PS3, the Harry Potter movies I got as a present, and Starship Troopers I got cheap so that I could compare the Blu-Ray version directly to the DVD version. I have a pretty massive DVD collection but the difference from DVD to Blu-Ray isn't big enough for me to justify re-purchasing movies that I already own. Plus I have a gaming backlog as it is, let alone trying to get through all of the movies I've bought but haven't watched yet...

Also can I just say that the Descent is one of the best ... genre ... movies that I have ever seen, and Snicks if you spoil it for anyone you're a terrible human being! * :axe: *

The best part was watching it without having ANY CLUE what to expect.
As to the two endings ***SPOILERS***:

We got the correct one IMHO, where nobody gets out. And for god sake, let's hope there isn't a sequel because the story is complete and whole. I hate it when they go back and shit on what they've already done George Lucas, I'm looking at you.

Band of Bros - YES!! would love that mate... also I suppose you know their shooting the sequel to it (abour the war in the pacific) in Australia - apparently same actors etc - so it follows on from the end of Band of Bros - cost estimated 600 odd million making it the most expensive miniseries ever made when its completed! - link http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0374463/ and check this out:

BTW - be careful trying to post you tube vids here Astiffbreeze - can lead to accidental self-banning - its a tech issue that we have been working on.
