Internal HDD Upgrades

http://i.imgur.com/X4Y2d.jpg

Demos, game installs, movies, music... they all chew through HDD space very quickly. If you need a little more space on the internal drive, putting a new HDD in is actually very simple. The specs required are a laptop (2.5") HDD with SATA interface, and no taller than 9.5mm. Some current prices (8/4/11) for applicable drives:
Roughly $67 for a 500GB (http://www.i-tech.com.au/products/73222_Samsung_500GB_Spinpoint_M7_5400rpm.aspx)
Roughly $79 for a 640GB (http://www.i-tech.com.au/products/78701_SAMSUNG_1PK_640GB_SATA_2_5__8MB_5400RPM.aspx )
Roughly $120 for a 750GB (http://www.i-tech.com.au/products/79105_Hitachi_750GB_Travelstar_5K750_5400rpm.aspx)

For step-by-step instructions on how to do the upgrade, including info on backing up your data and restoring it after you've inserted the new internal HDD, refer to these two links:

USB Hubs
http://i.imgur.com/V5zyc.png
Controller recharge stations, headsets, external hard drives, thumb drives, keyboards, PSeye cameras... there are a lot of USB devices for your PS3 out there, and sometimes you need to have them all plugged in at the same time. The simple solution is to get a powered USB hub. I use the D-Link DUB-H7 (http://www.dlink.com.au/products/?pid=149) 7-port powered USB hub (pictured above), which you can pick up for about $50 (http://www.i-tech.com.au/products/754_D_LINK_DUB_H7_7_PORT_USB2_0_HUB_FOR.aspx), but there are plenty of other options on the market. Be sure to get a powered USB hub rather than an unpowered one; many USB devices need to draw current from the USB port and will often not work properly with unpowered hubs.

Keyboards

http://i.imgur.com/4HXNc.jpg

Entering PSN or chat messages with the controller can be incredibly painful, so do yourself a favour and get a proper keyboard of some kind. There are plenty of options here. Wireless keyboards have the (hopefully obvious :p) advantage of being completely wireless, although the downside to that is the fact that they need to have their batteries replaced from time to time. Some examples of wireless keyboards include the Kaiser Baas BlueTooth Mini Keyboard (http://www.kaiserbaas.com/kaiser-baas-product-page/wifi-devices/bluetooth-keyboard) (pictured above), endorsed by repercuss as being "fucking brilliant" (http://www.ausforces.com/showthread.php?2294-I-wanna-go-on-the-AUF-Trial-list!&p=254501&viewfull=1#post254501), and available for about $50 (http://www.warcom.com.au/keyboardsandmice/23852_kaiser-baas-bluetooth-mini-keyboard), or the Datel Powerboard (http://uk.codejunkies.com/Products/PS3-Wireless-Powerboard__EF000611.aspx), available for about $27 (http://www.ozgameshop.com/ps3-accessories/datel-wireless-powerboard-keyboard-ps3). Other options include any old USB keyboard (I use an old iMac keyboard (http://i.imgur.com/9Xtyp.jpg) because it's fairly compact at roughly the size of a laptop keyboard) which have the advantage of not requiring batteries, or the proper Sony clip-on keypad (http://i.imgur.com/cO5xE.jpg) for your controller, which you can get for about $37 (http://www.ozgameshop.com/ps3-accessories/official-sony-wireless-thumb-keypad-for-controller-ps3).

Headsets

http://i.imgur.com/AWk7F.jpg

Mics are an absolute must for AUFers, and you can pick up cheap USB or bluetooth mics pretty much everywhere these days. However if you need to game whilst others are sleeping or studying, it might be worth investing in a proper headset, which is basically a pair of headphones with a mic attached. Turtle Beach make some cheap stereo ones for the PS3, but if you're after a surround sound headset the options are limited. Dolby Headphone is a standard that seems to be held in high regard by audiophiles, so consider one of the headsets that support Dolby Headphone, such as the Astro A40 (http://www.astrogaming.com/products/detail/4/A40-Headset/), Tritton AX 720 (http://www.trittonusa.com/index.php/products/gaming_audio_technology/ax-720/), or Turtle Beach DPX21 (http://www.turtlebeach.com/products/ps3-gaming-headsets/ear-force-dpx21.aspx). Alternatively you can buy one of the separate processors that support Dolby Headphone (such as the Turtle Beach EarForce DSS (http://www.turtlebeach.com/products/audio-processors/ear-force-dss.aspx) or Astro Mixamp (http://www.astrogaming.com/products/detail/69/MixAmp/)) and then pair that with a good stereo headset. Other surround headsets include the Tritton AX Pro (http://www.trittonusa.com/index.php/products/gaming_audio_technology/ax-pro/) and Sharkoon X-Tatic Digital (http://www.sharkoon.com/?q=en/content/x-tatic-digital). For more info on headsets check out our dedicated headsets thread (http://www.ausforces.com/showthread.php?5039-Headsets).

Controller Recharge Stations

http://i.imgur.com/o07nr.jpg

Keeping your controllers charged can be a hassle sometimes, and one of the downsides of wireless controllers can be the head-scratching that goes on where you try to remember where you left the damn things... Controller recharge stations can be useful because they ensure that your controllers stay charged, as well as keeping them neatly organised and presentable. I use a two controller charging station (pictured above) which also doubles as a small unpowered USB hub (http://i.imgur.com/uZ6rm.jpg) (although I'd recommend you get a separate powered one instead), and you can generally find them at places like EB Games as well as shops like Target or Big W for $20-30 in various designs. Single controller recharge stations are also available (basically just a convenient place to leave your controller when it's charging) or even 4-controller recharge stations (http://i.imgur.com/8Pf48.jpg) if you have that many controllers.

Controller Add-Ons

http://i.imgur.com/pMdoB.jpg

Some people might be very happy with the DualShock 3 or SixAxis, but others like to tinker with them. One of the things I find hard to live without are clip-on triggers (pictured above). The GioTeck RealTriggers (http://www.gioteck.com/wordpress/?page_id=84) are the ones to get, although they can be tough to find these days. There are plenty of cheap knock-offs although their designs can vary slightly and some of them are rubbish. Personally I find them very useful for games where you need to be using L2 and R2 at the same time as the sticks since they bring those buttons much higher, stop your fingers sliding off the bottom of them, and give you a better hold on the controller. The GioTeck ones are rock-solid too, and once clipped on feel like they are part of the original mould (the knock-offs tend to struggle in that area). Other popular controller add-ons are stick extenders such as Kontrol Freeks (http://www.kontrolfreek.com/Game-Controller-Accessories/KontrolFreek-FPS-Freek.asp) and rubber caps for the top of the sticks such as Caps4Stix (http://www.bespoke-solutions.net/), although I haven't tried either.

I swear by my trigger-extenders. How the dualshock didn't have them in design i do not know. Having played an extensive motorstorm session, i had the early onset of arthritis and therefore investment in these babies for father's day was a done deal.

I bought some cheap ones off eBay that proclaimed they were GioTeck ones and turned out to be cheap knock offs that fall off all the time. My original GioTeck ones are way better. And definitely agree that they're how the DualShock and SixAxis should have been in the first place; they even eliminate the annoying problem of the controller pressing L2/R2 when you put it down!

I'm not sure if it's any good TBH since I don't know anyone who uses one, just thought I'd put it in the OP as another option. Also GAME UK previously refused to ship to Australia but having a look at their site I see that they will now ship to Oz.

Pro ellite wireless ps3 controller*. Essentially it looks like a xbox controller for the ps3. Could make the transition from the box to PS3 easier for some people.

*I personally havent used or know of anyone who has used this product.

I can't play BFBC2 without them... in fact I'm about to glue a set of them to an older controller to make sure they can never pop off. When I'm confident that the glue hasn't weakened the plastic buttons I'll probably do the same with my other controllers.

Let me know how you go with this. I've been considering gluing mine as well.

I have 6 sets of them (for two controllers) because they are $4 a pack from game.

I find that the crack open after a few weeks and pop off, so need replacing.

Some of you might be aware that Quickflix was added to the PS3 a few days ago (2 days?), which allows live streaming of movies. It lives under the "Video" tab in XMB. A download is needed before you can utilise it.

Aussie PlayStation 3 owners will be able to watch full movies through their consoles as part of a partnership with online rental and streaming service, Quickflix. An introductory price of $4.99 will be offered to PS3 owners for the first three months, after which it will return to its normal $14.99 monthly fee.

Here's (http://www.quickflix.com.au/Catalogue/DVDList/Newreleases/571) the list of current releases available from Quickflix website.

I can't believe I'm only hearing about this now! In fact, I can't believe I only just found this thread. Does anyone have any idea how much effect there is on connection quality? Is it possible to use it on a power board? And importantly for me, can it work on a UPS? I have no idea about this tech.

I use Vuze to stream whatever media I want to the PS3 via the network from my media server, and I only have BF3 and AC:R taking up space, so I have no need for a bigger HDD, but when I finish building my new PC I will definitely take the 60GB SSD out of this craptop and slot it in! Well, after a bit of research to see if it's really worth doing. Maybe this particular SSD can house BF3 on the PC and I'll get a bigger one for the PS3.. Is it weird that I'm getting excited thinking about this?!

I bought a cheapy USB hub off Ebay just last week.. Admittedly a bit of a novelty, as it has only four ports.. But it has the PS symbols on it and they light up which makes it totally better than any other selection. It also has a fine transfer rate, and I can now charge my iPhone, headset, controller and have the wireless keyboard dongle plugged in.. and still have a spare port on the PS3.

As far as keyboards go, Logitech does several dirt cheap wireless keyboard/mouse combos, I got mine for about $40 from Dick Smith and it's still small enough to fit in my laptop bag diagonally. It works from at least 4 metres away comfortably too, and the mouse works perfectly on even the roughest surface (I can use it on my thigh if I need to!) so I use the same set to control the media server from the comfort of my couch.

+rep for everyone!

The connection quality is almost as good as using an ethernet cable.. I cant give you an exact speed because my router is only G whereas this runs a typical 100megabits transfer rate. It has never dropped out on me while using it, mind you I still had to reset it before I use it as overtime it lost connection. Streaming is as good as a wired network, because my router is outdated it still has a slight buffer when it starts off but runs 720p smoothly after that

If you use it on a power board it looses quality, so plug it directly into a wall and plug the power board into its passthrough.

R2 L2 Trigger extenders- VERDICT YAY or NAY?

They make the controller better. However, the cheap ones pop-off, and the Gioteck ones end up cracking. If you're brave you could glue them to your controller.

Ultimately, Sony should have just made proper triggers in the first bloody place.

I'll tell you what my problem is first and hopefully someone can inform me if its just me.. Some of you's who are in game with me on BF3 (especially those on the opposing team) would sometimes see me hit the floor (go prone) when you attack.. I know barra has asked this question to me when he comes and cuts my throat.. now I don't do it on purpose.. what I'm trying to do is turn and fire at the same time in a reflex motion and what i end up doing is hitting the drop to the floor button..now I have read or heard Nurf say that he is getting some controllers from England.. now my question is .. are there better controllable controllers out there (cordless) that make game playing a shit load easier..

I get this quite often on my older controllers, I think the L\R3 buttons have become a bit looser and easier to accidentally hit.

Mouse n Keyboard dudes, no such issues :p

Does dropshotting work in BF3? i have never tried it.. that said the only time i go prone is when i have a zillion bullets flying at me :D

You can shoot while dropping and rising from prone for a split second

I have also done this a few times, no idea what the hell is going on.... Ya just end up on the floor thinking I don't want to be on the floor....

that basically sums it up and then you look up and see someone about to stab you or shoot you in the head which is common for me.. the funniest time it happened and I believe it was you magpie who said it to me one day "am I laying down having a nap ..

well unless I throw the controller in the bin.. stay tuned.. but I will toss it .. so now that we have figured out that it's the controller keeping me back from being the killing machine I'm destined to be.. is there a better aftermarket controller out there better than the PS3 generic one..

i had to buy a new controller the other week. i raged and smashed my controller aft losing in a 30 lap race of GT5 on the laps lap by spinning out... turns out there are pendulum thingys inside that are heavy as fuck and can fly a long way when ejected from the plastic casing at speed

Don't you love it when you can blame the equipment! - not saying anythings wrong with your "equipment" though Des

I honestly never understood dudes who smash their own shit up. I also dont understand people who loose their shit at a video game. Makes you look douchey and costs you money and time cleaning the mess up...games are for fun

Heres a tip if your playing games and all of a sudden not having fun ....TURN THE FUCKING THING OFF!!

I laugh at times when over the team-chat you hear someone scream at the top of their voice at a smurf or the opposition when things don't go their way.. i sit back and say to my self.."don't they realise it's just a fucken game" if they scream and jump and down just on a game.. imagine what real life drama' do to them

Yep i think the same , i can handle the occasionally spit the dummy , but people who utterly loose their shit and ive not met anyone from AUF i would class as this bad but ive heard people utterly rage to an extent i think ......wow what a fuckwit. Ropes is the best rager because his voice goes from a deep manly John Laws to a high pitched Fran Dresher

I haven't played much with him but Drace is a good one.

And Leroy is a pisser because raging in a pom accent just makes it so much better.

I do my fair share of whining too

I'm one to give the ol' troller a fling across the room. I don't usually get too angry at a game, but I go off my chops whenever I get disconnected from a server in BF3. Especially halfway through a big ticket metro game.

Yeah I know their fine - I'm touting them a competitors against Ropes for the most enjoyable rager to listen too.

I have never broken any thing but ill get annoyed at how shot the physics of a game are. I also feel it as a stress relief after a bad day. Yes I realise its a game but its better than putting holes in the walls. I call bullshit a lot but its due to the lag/physics not working properly not because I got killed.

If lag wasn't to blame I feel people wouldn't whine anywhere near as much. I never used to get angry when I played Resistance, they were the BEST servers I have ever played on online history.

Imagine the ragers on the WiiU, damn crack the screen throwing that.

I accidentally chipped the first Sixaxis throwing it to a mate when i forgot that it was wireless , so used to the cord snap-back.

just an update on my post regarding the controller.. walked into my local EB store yesterday and saw on sale "spartan" PS3 controllers for $36.00 so I thought I'd give them a try.. I can say I am very impressed with them.. as I have been formating the PS3 for another reason.. I'm yet to give them a try out in a full game.. will post my final findings when I do.. but so far all good..

what I like about its feel is the tightness of the controls.. the spot button is more protruded which feels good to press the 3rd button and levers feel good.. I have only tried flying a helicopter in it so far and what I found is that (make chiips happy) I am able to control the hover ..

edit: ok.. have used it in a big ticket game of metro.. my conclusion is that the controls feel good for the flying aspect.. as a foot soldier not so good .. the sprint button to hold down is very hard to maintain.. near on break your thumb holding it down.. my recommendation for BF3 is 3 out of 10
