View Full Version : Well, balls [help with black screen of death]

I've been having trouble with my PS3, something know as 'the black screen of death'.

Something to do with the HDMI Video Output settings.

So I've tried resetting them (holding down the button and stuff) but that does not work, I still get a black screen and no sound whenever I turn on the Playstation.

(Yes, for the numerous about to ask, it is plugged into the monitor screen -_-)

Oh and yeah, I plug it into a Computer screen, like a HD LCD Monitor thing.

It was working fine before, then all of a sudden just died and went completely black.

The Playstation works fine plugged into a standard def. television and after buying a brand new HDMI cable (thinking it was a problem with the cable) and plugging it it (which didn't work), I deduced that it must be a problem with the Playstation HDMI output.

So I take it to iTech, for them to fix it. (There all a bunch of prats)

And they say, yeah yeah it works fine, plug it into a HD screen they had at the shop and it worked perfectly. (They still charged me $120, for them to look at it for two seconds, say 'Yeah it's alright', and to escort me out the door)

So now, after spending copious amounts of money on this stupid machine, I've decided that it must be a problem with the monitor screen.

Which seems odd, as I can plug it into my laptop and computer as a second screen, using a HDMI cable and it works fine.

So I'm completely lost.

The only solution may be to buy a new screen, but that's balls as I'm not exactly loaded with cash.

Anybody else had or seen a problem like this, or can offer any help?

Or can give me a shoulder to burst into man-tears on?

(Man tears, more powerful then normal tears as they are filled with masculinity, making them more badass and counteracting against the belief that tears are for sissys. Man-tears, the tears, of a man)

Exactly what did you do?

From what you posted -

-You are trying to play your PS3 into an LCD or plasma?
-But when plugged in using HDMI you dont get a picture..
-But, without changing anything (settings etc) you plug it into a PC monitor and you get a picture??

Assuming you the PS settings set to output video via HDMI .. it might be the settings on your screen but try some other things..

- If it works in the shop - then check another HDMI device with your main screen - to check that the screen's HDMI is OK .. if yes then
- check the PS3 settings - if its set to composite (red, yellow and white) or component (red, blue and green) then you wont get a picture through HDMI - so you have to set it using the CRT - then change it to HDMI then attach the screen.

If that fails then I have NFI :52:

Pretty much plug your PS3 into a working TV and then change the settings as they should be for a HD TV with HDMI cables, then swap back to that TV and it should work.

That, or you are retarded and its on the wrong channel or something

I have had a similar problem since last night but i'm pretty certain it's my TV because my DVD player doesn't work either, and the PS3 runs fine on the plasma in the family room.

My problem:

1. Turned on PS3 (connected through HDMI) and it said it was not connected.
2. Reset the PS3 video settings, etc., tried a new HDMI cable, etc. still nothing.
3. Tried connecting through normal red, white and yellow output (mental blank as to what it's called). PS3 worked in black and white and flickering for about 2 minutes then turned off again and no signal.
4. Tried PS3 with original HDMI cable into Plasma in the family room and it worked fine.
5. Tried with same HDMI cable in my TV again without touching PS3 settings, etc. and nothing.
6. Tried connecting DVD player through normal red white and yellow plugs and black and white picture.

Sounds to me like the input thing on my TV is fucked. Because i still get fine picture when it says nothing is connected... :S

Could you shed any light on the issue Snicks? :(
