The original model was 60GB. That one is backwards compatible with PS2 games (it actually contains PS2 hardware inside it). Every model after that is NOT backwards compatible.

If you're desperate to play PS2 games but don't have a backwards compatible PS3, then you should consider just buying a PS2. They're reasonably cheap these days.

YAY 60GB. It is the one I have. It is awesome. Go buying PS3 - midnight launch. Guy at GAME had his clock 5 minutes fast so I was easily on of first in Australia to get a PS3!!

But the 60GB is the only one with built in backwards compatability - otherwise you have to get it chipped.

I'm pretty sure you can have chips put in them to make backwards compatability work. Its a region thing for memory - not a hardward problem? Its like with PS2's you could take them to get chipped to be able to play non-Aussie games.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but thats what I understand of the situation.

I haven't heard of anything like that :(

Would be cool if it was around but I just can't see it happening: the PS2 hardware was very unique and incredibly expensive to manufacture, which is why Sony dropped it from PS3's as soon as it could.

The Ps3 only uses emulation software..... And the software MUST be on the console somewhere because remember they ARE selling you PS1 and soon PS2 games through the PSN store - plus plenty of PS2 games are getting remakes on blu-ray. I could be wrong though.

PS1 titles are all handled via software emulation, which is why every PS3 can play them. The Cell has more than enough grunt for that. PS2 games are a different kettle of fish though, because the PS2 architecture was so unique. With the very first PS3's (Japan and North America), Sony actually included a full replica of the PS2 inside the PS3, no shit.

For the European (and Australian) launch PS3's, they used a slightly simplified version of the PS2 hardware to try and cut down on manufacturing costs. That's why the original NA and JP PS3's have 100% PS2 compatibility, whereas the launch European (and Australian) PS3's don't have a guaranteed 100% ability to play all PS2 games: some don't work correctly with the simplified PS2 hardware.

The PS2 games being remade on Blu-ray are actually PS3 games believe it or not! They're re-written for the PS3 and will only work on the PS3.

PS2 games look horrible on my 60gb PS3,emulators on PC have high res mods etc and look sweet if your interested in that,i'll just wait for all PS2 classics to get rebooted on Bluray collections ;)

Yeah some of the PS2 emulators on PC look amazing, especially PCSX2 0.9 and above. The downside is that while the games look amazing, they're often flakey and you can't play all of them right through :(

Unfortunately true but at least N64 emulation in high res works, Project 64 & Goldeneye mods FTW!!
