This is becoming a big problem at the moment... I am wondering if it was a certain batch or something?
First steggs, then vlasta, then twisted... and slylake's mate has a busted console too - and The Peach chimes in saying a few of his teammates also have busted consoles now...

I am wondering if it was a certain batch? when did you guys buy your consoles? are they 40gb or 60gb?

Sony used to make faultless products, and I am concerned - I would hate this to happen to mine, especially coz I didn't take the extended warranty...

luckily I took the extended I think 5 year warranty but (touch wood) no problems yet. I got mine the day after it came out (60gb model) if that helps :D

Also a mate of mine got the 40gb version about a few months ago and his one stopped reading the games all together so he had to send it off to get it fixed........

All my other mates (about 5 or 6 of them) got the 60gb version and they havent had any problems yet......

UltraRigs

60 gb too. Never had any problems (yet, touches wood too). A mate of mine had a 40 gb for like a week and it failed on him.

geese seems like teh 40gbs are the bad batch hey

kobeson
15-05-2008, 11:49 AM
hmmmm... so it seems like it's the 40gb model?

great - I have the 40, and no extended warranty...

I bought mine in December and (touch wood) it's fine so far...

Twisted got his in October I think - not sure which model it is tho...

oh damn. I got mine November last year, 40 gig model. I really hope my doesn't fail on me. The screen went black mid game for me the other day like twisted's but luckily mine rebooted alright

kobeson
15-05-2008, 11:57 AM
mine has frozen up during online play before - but my screen has never gone blank...

at this rate, sony will be in the shit pretty soon...

(hey acriu mate - your avatar never shows up for me - does it for you?)

discobreakfast
15-05-2008, 11:59 AM
yeahh that has happened to me a few times, it just like went black screen and rebooted. Might also depends onn how well ventilated the system is and how much its used......

I tried to stay clear of playing mine on really hot days cos my room is really warm as it is. Also I have a habit of turning off the main switch at the back of the machine whenever it is off, not sure if it doesnt anything but I just do it LOL.

 haha, you got me big time then mate ;) I had meant to ask you b4 - what a TOOL I am!!! fully deserving of my special rank!

by the way, The Peach says some 60gb models have busted, as far as he is aware, so it is not definitely pipointed to 40gb models...

acriu55
15-05-2008, 01:09 PM
haha I was hoping someone would fall for it. I was starting to think everyone picked up on it

ahh phew at least it's not just the 40 gig's. I might go searching on some ps3 forums to find out if there is anyway to prevent them from dying.

my main thought would be overheating, like its a common problem consdiering how much your ps3 is used and that you most likely dont clean it often..... maybe try one of them larger fans or cooling things? couple of bucks migh save you heaps down the track

UltraRigs
15-05-2008, 01:49 PM
How do you guys shut down your PS3?

It might have something to do with that how the drives are failing.

I used to just in game switch it off at back. But now I PS->Turn off system and you can hear the drive slow down and shut down. Then I switch it off at back.

kobeson
15-05-2008, 01:51 PM
@acrui - LMAO (even if it's at my own expense!!!)

well, concerned as I am, I rang Sony, and they said it is no particular batch, and it is both the 40 and the 60 that it has happened to...

they suggested the following:
1. don't keep it in a confined space while switched on (the back and sides must be in open space).
2. keep it in a dust-free environment.
3. unplug it when not in use (like disco said).

I reckon those fans could be a goer - where can you get them from klaz? do you know mate? or does anybody??

discobreakfast
15-05-2008, 02:10 PM
ive read mixed reviews about those fans....personally i dont trust them cos they are cheap asian 3rd party manufacturers and apparently some actually take a lot more power to run then what they cool so in effect they are actually heating your ps3 up more.....

LOL@ Ultrarigs man that is a BIG NO NO. You cant just switch it off from the back thats like just pulling the power plug while its on, you could easily burn out the motherboard, the same would happen if you did it to your PC. Best way is to PS button like you said and choose TURN OFF SYSTEM and let it shut down properly. Good lad for doing it the right way :D

I so hope people arent doing your old method ultra cos that will see them malfunction quickly :S

kobeson
15-05-2008, 02:25 PM
oh really?
there goes that then...
maybe I should hire a small child to breath cool air on the system when I'm gaming... I've never dabbled with slave labour...

:D

I didn't see rigsy's post - bloody hell mate, it's a wonder yours is still running mate!!!

I also was thinking, I wonder if leaving it on while not in use would have a good or bad effect on it... you know like cabs, how they clock up 1000km b4 they're even close to dead, coz they're on all the time... not sure if this is recommended or not, but I notice ozchap always has his on - folding @ home...

acriu55
15-05-2008, 02:53 PM
I know that leaving a game paused is a huge no no. I have blown up two ps2 that way ( damn final fantasy games and there limited save points). I'm not sure about leaving it running normally though

discobreakfast
15-05-2008, 02:53 PM
LOl child labour, good profit though haha

I dont like to leave it on at all. No point having it on unless you are running folding and you have to remember Sony did delay the PS3s release plenty of times so you have to treat it like a baby LOL :D

kobeson
15-05-2008, 02:56 PM
I do treat it like a baby :)

Hey Kobes, what about my dead one?.... I also know of another guy (monkeycheese was on old site & is mate of mine) that had a dead one. I'm currently helping Vlasta & Twisted with thiers...Sony are pretty useless. Gotta keep chasing them.
All the dead ones i know of are newer 40gb models with mainly failed disc drives (although mine stopped doing everything!).
The fans are a waste of money.
Mine has always been well ventilated (as you can see in the 'my set up' thread and don't think it's a major issue in the problems we have experienced.
I have also had COD4 freeze & also go black...problem seemed to increase until i cleaned the disc?!?
So, if anyones worried or has problems, pm me: i have all the Sony contact details & i've been thru it myself! Be prepared to have no ps3 for a month though.

kobeson

Tank1252

Gotta explain my COD4 crappiness somehow, lol.
Actually steggs went 1st.

kobeson
15-05-2008, 04:47 PM

so, hopefully, once you get it back, it is for good!!!

kobeson
15-05-2008, 08:57 PM
60gb models aren't safe either campyy... it can happen to either...

vlastanovak
15-05-2008, 09:01 PM
Mine was a 60gB and mine shat itself.

kobeson
15-05-2008, 09:45 PM
yeah, I spoke to sony, and they said there is nothing it can be put down to yet... no 'batch date', no model type, nothing... just plain ol' bad luck it seems... might have something to do with overheating, might not tho...

did you guys have your consoles in an open space? or was it squashed into a shelf?

vlastanovak
15-05-2008, 09:48 PM
Mine was open space, sitting on the desk. Standing vertical though.

I think you're better off having them horizontal.

[EDIT] Just read my post. Sounds kinda sinister.

Tank1252
15-05-2008, 09:53 PM
Mine in open space, laying horizontal, wrapped in cotton wool.
Read somewhere failiure rate is about 2%, not the less than 1% Sony claim. Sounds not too far out, especially if this site is to go on...

kobeson
15-05-2008, 09:58 PM
bloody hell - well I would hate for it to happen for me, so whoever it happens to has my complete sympathy... I would be lost without it I reckon...

Tank1252
15-05-2008, 10:05 PM
Yeah, if it happens to me again, i've already decided i will go straight out and buy a 2nd one....I have plenty of tv's to use it with (6 in the house).
Irony is I actually did own 2 for a time. Bought one after i got my Bravia, then Sony did their free ps3 promotion the week after, and the kindly store guy re-dated my receipt so i could get a 2nd. Returned the 1st one though.
Maybe i shouldn't have posted that...

vlastanovak
15-05-2008, 10:09 PM
I contemplated buying a new one when mine went down, then would have sold it when i got mine back.

kobeson
15-05-2008, 10:17 PM
yeah, I reckon I prob would contemplate that too... pity they don't rent out consoles anymore...

steggs
15-05-2008, 10:53 PM
mine was the 60 gig model, got it the day i came out. just stoped reading disks. *the may have mad a dodgey batch of blue ray players.

acriu55
15-05-2008, 11:36 PM
yeh I'd probally seriously consider buying another one if it happened to me. With my track record in consoles Ill be needing another one down the track anyway (blown up 1 psone and 2 ps2's *:? ) so I'd use it as a spare when my other one comes back

Hey fellas add deano to the list with a broken playstation :( I got mine for christmas. Sending it back soon when i can be bothered.

Hey Deano...thought i hadn't seen you online for a while. Let me know if you need any help. I've done a few of these now...

How to fix tank? It runs dvd's but no games tho.

Tank1252
03-06-2008, 06:46 PM
What about bluray movies? You got the latest firmware?
Does it not play them or not recognize the disk?

Dean_Mc
05-06-2008, 05:26 PM
an error comes up. A few times the game loads plays for 5mins then crashes. Firmware is just the updates right ?

Tank1252
05-06-2008, 07:37 PM
If the firmware (updates) are up to date & it does it with all games, it's gotta be the ps3. I'd ring Sony & see what they say. Be prepared to be missing it for a little while.

Tank1252
05-06-2008, 08:10 PM
i'm here to serve....
and unfortunately i've already had dealings with 5 that have sh*t themselves!
Dean's seems a more unusual problem...unless it is the beginning of the end of the bluray disc reading.

Spoke to sony friday they got me to reformat but now the games dont even come up in the main menu. Sending it back tomorrow.

Tank1252
09-06-2008, 07:33 PM
Yeah mate, the sooner you send it the sooner you'll get it back. Be prepaed for a 4 week wait though. Wish i could tell ya something better...
Let me know via pm if you want any more help. It's a pretty straight forward process. But my best advice *is CHASE SONY REGULARLY. Nothing much happens till you chase them, then when you do it all moves on pretty quickly. :toimonster:
